Okay so common tone is when you play chords that aren't in the same key but share two or more notes. So for example the song Bordeom is Tyler switching keys like 4 times which is unheard of for a popular song.
The podcast Dissect goes into it in greater detail, its super informative.
Not sure what you mean, but as long as each chord shares two notes or more when played in sucession, it won't sound as jarring to the listener. That's all music is really, patterns and trying not to sound dissonant lol.
