Why would Obama care about codifying Roe when it seemed like it was settled law in those days?

this isn't actually true, in 2007 Obama ran part of his campaign on the promise of codifying RvW then once he got into office he said the Freedom of Choice Act didn't actually matter as a political priority for democrats

    Oh interesting, I didn't know

here's a post from 2009 by an abortion charity on it

    ourbodiesourselves.org/blog/obama-freedom-of-choice-act-not-highest-legislative-priority

In a speech Obama gave to Planned Parenthood Action Fund on July 17, 2007, the then-presidential candidate said, “The first thing I’d do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act.” He referenced it again in 2008, on the 35th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

Now, the Freedom of Choice Act is not highest legislative priority. I believe that women should have the right to choose. But I think that the most important thing we can do to tamp down some of the anger surrounding this issue is to focus on those areas that we can agree on. And that’s — that’s where I’m going to focus.

which ones specifically do you believe make this the most productive congress ever

are you just saying "most productive" in terms of like, pleasantries and work, rather than in terms of meaningful legislature

the only "important" legislature i can think of from teh 111th congress is dodd-frank, which was essentially a massive smoke & mirrors failure. The original ACA never passed in 2010 and the substituted HR 3590 / reconciliation bills were both bandaids that failed to incur real longstanding reform besides tiny benefit.

Many substantial proposed bills failed or were stuck in house/congress. I am aware legislature like ARRA, SCHIP, repeal of don't ask don't tell were passed during said time, none of which I would consider major victories or substantial change. Even the CARD act had many unintended consequences.

one of the major origins of modern filibuster debate was in the 111th congress.

I said one of the most. Obamacare, Ledbetter, Dodd-Frank, stimulus, the education bill. Like these bills or not they passed legislation.

I really would disagree with that. ESSA was just an update of NCLB which was due for reauthorization anyway. ARRA is no more productive than trump signing CARES Act (ironic since ARRA was protested by republicans). It was just a response to the recession, legislature was going to be passed no matter what. Obamacare was an utter disaster, half the reason ACA ended up so minced was internal fighting within the party and constant issues with the bill.

The fair pay act/ledbetter I'll give you. That and Dodd-Frank are the only ones which outside of ideological agreements seem fair-game, but that's like 2 major acts.

Even though Obamarcare wasn’t what everyone wanted, it was a herculean effort to get it passed, even in a 60 vote Senate where Lieberman acted as the Manchin and killed the public option, and it helped tens of millions of people

I'm not debating whether or not the ACA was better than the alternative of having nothing at all, i'm debating if democrats were truly productive in doing the best they could have.

They were. It took moving heaven and earth to get that bill passed.

MAGAtards cant fathom the fact that moderates dont like them. The fact that they might not learn from this and continue on with the lunatic candidates might actually be a good thing

Which one? Either way I think Cuomo would’ve done better than Hochul and helped more down ballot. Probably could’ve helped fund raise too

Especially if the house isn’t as narrow as it could have been 220 is probably good enough for them to send some BS to the senate.
