yeah hdmi 2.1 vrr-capable displays can double the frames so 30 looks like 60

once they add it to the PS5 system update you’ll be able to activate it any game. It might not work as well in games they aren’t patched to handle vrr as well, but there’s a workaround still

doubling the frames does not make it "look like 60" frame doubling means showing the same exact image but at 60hz, so it still looks 30 to the eye, just in betwewen frames it doubles the image 1:1

what youre thinking is of frame interpretation where the display "guesses" what will be next. This is called "soap oprah" effect and is awful in video games as it causes MAJOR MAJOR ghosting and game mode on tv's disables this immediately and is not meant for gaming.

also to add to this. games dont need to support VRR. it just needs to be system wide. VRR is just natively changing the monitor / tv's refresh rate to match what is displayed on screen so no screen tearing and the game looks much smoother to the eye without judders.

I know what you’re talking about because my display currently has that frame interpretation thing and it’s awful

edit: someone on reddit explained how it works. Essentially VRR wouldn’t work on 30fps games because the range for VRR displays is 40-120hz, however with LFC’s frame doubling it’s basically interpreted as 60hz and so VRR kicks in making it look a lot smoother. But I guess you’re right it’s not the same as 60fps.
