I've never really listened to her but those performances were amazing, especially the second song.
Diving into Strange Mercy now.

I haven't read it yet but everyone I've seen talking about it has said it's legit a tame interview

I haven’t read it either. Seems like the reaction is more about her taking the interview down
Just read it. Honestly, there's nothing controversial in this.
They wanted the interview taken down because the interviewer is s***ty at her job. It's entirely boring and the questions she asked Clark are so weird and personal that it just feels...annoying.
Dunno why there's so much reaction over this.

it's an album nominally about her dad coming home from prison, why would you not have 'personal' questions arising from that

It's not that. It's that the interviewer like legit insults Vincent during the interview in backhanded ways.
Straight up called her father's jailtime as being punishment for "white collar crimes" lol

"Clark’s father was jailed in 2010 for his role in a $43million ‘pump-and-dump’ stock manipulation scheme, and was then freed in 2019."
literally what it was lol?
"If the reason they decide to not spend 46 mins with my work is that her father got arrested and people don't like that she's exploring that then I'm sure there's plenty of other work out there for them that they can enjoy that is morally pure.
They should find pure work from pure people and enjoy it."
That might be the most controversial thing Clark said in the interview but it comes off as her being defensive against an interviewer asking a targeted question

Dude, I'm not even saying I disagree with the interviewer's statements, but when you work in a professional interviewing job and work in PR, those kinds of targeted statements or labeling is how you immediately discredit yourself and your publication's credibility and how you immediately get an artist to tune you out.
It's the interviewers fault for letting her own personal opinions and biases structure and frame her questions to the interviewee, which is something you legit should never do in journalism lmao
The interviewer straight up tried to bring up the Floyd "riots" as a parallel to the record and Annie Clark was like WTF
And then when Clark said it wasn't really relevant, the interviewer was like "do you not have strong feelings on it? Do you wish to be ambiguous on it?" and Clark is again like WTF

but like how is it labelling to say what it literally is? those are white collar crimes
annie clark as a musician is somebody i like a lot and i have broadly liked a lot of her non musical output but she showed her ass badly this rollout imo and this is just the latest incident.
it's not cancel culture to cast a critical eye over the fact her dad was jailed for defrauding millions from people lol.
and if she thinks an album about her dad coming home from jail (broadly speaking) isn't gonna prompt questions about her personal relationship with him, prison reform (!!) etc then she is much less smart than i gave her credit for. the contrived aloofness doesn't gel with the subject matter
like i don't even think that interview is that controversial or interesting for the most part, she's just weirdly standoffish

Clark isn't being stand-offish, the interviewer is asking her how the Floyd "riots" relate to her dad getting home from prison lol. It's a badly structured interview and anyone who works in the field or has been interviewed before can realize that right off the bat lol
"Did you ever rebel against your dad's lifestyle growing up as a teenager?"
"I didn't grow up with him...and I don't know what lifestyle you're presuming but...."
How is St. Vincent even supposed to respond to a s***ty question like that?
