Novak is really unique, in a unique situation. I can't think of any other all-time level athlete in any other sport where the sports establishment is so desperate to see him fail. All the millions and millions of marketing dollar invested in Fedal as the rivalry that would define the 2010s, with Federer's perfect image for marketing (especially luxury goods to the sport's mostly well-off fanbase) and with Nadal being the muscular complement to play the foil to Federer on clay and coming as a respectable 2nd, and yet it was Djokovic who came out of nowhere and took them both down by simply having an overall better game, completely dominating the #1 ranking and soon to have literally every single record.

Usually the greatest player in any sport has the media promoting him, the commentators pushing for him and richest fans who can afford Finals tickets cheering on for him. Especially in the finals the tickets are super expensive and its more the rich, casual fans who end up making the majority of the crowd so they just cheer on the guy who is most promoted and that's usually the guy whose won the most. The more that Novak has won, the more hate he gets.....its like the opposite of every other athlete. With every single win against Fedal the dislike grew. Especially when it became clear that he's likely to own every major record and that it would be undisputable in every objective sense that he is the best tennis player ever, the dislike really intensified.

He's a god in his home country but the guy simply has the wrong image to appeal to most Western fans, despite being generally popular in the East. The fans are on his side when he plays in Shanghai, but never in places like London. Tennis was the sport of Western royalty, and still today its fanbase is largely Westerners and more from the upper class than the lower class like basketball, soccer..etc. It seems that this largely Western fanbase of tennis prefers Federer as the image of the GOAT, a man from a very rich Western country associated with luxury watches and expensive chocolate like Lindt, and his image always reflected this high class and luxury. Federer just looks like a tennis GOAT. Compare Federer's sponsorships from Rolex to Mercedes Benz to Djokovic's Seiko and Peugot, the image of Federer as the ultimate classy gentleman who would fit in perfectly in a high class ball full of global bankers, compared to Djokovic's image as a Eastern European villain who is portrayed as unclassy and thuggish.

Yet Novak can take all that hate and turn it into positive energy, its incredible. That's what makes his performances in finals of Grand Slams in places like London, New York, Paris and Melbourne so impressive, because he can generate energy without the social approval that Federer has always enjoyed in the Grand Slams. He doesn't have the wind under his sails of the crowd support, he is pushing against the wind, and yet he still flies past them and wins. Kyrgios said that no matter how many titles Novak wins, Federer will always be GOAT, regardless of tennis results. And you will see such sentiment expressed by casual tennis fans from the West all over social media. You will see endless rationalizations trying to justify it with slander on his morality or personality or this or that....but in the end Djokovic is simply not of the right type. And they're right. In terms of marketing, in terms of promotion by Tennis Channel and every other tennis media outlet he will never be royalty that Federer is no matter how much he beats him. But on the actual tennis court, Novak will be the king and even in a 4th set with the crowd cheering on his opponent, they all kneel.

doesn't mean s***, he was getting his ass handed to him in that semi and would have lost if it wasn't for the accident

My b I thought you were talking about the QF against Novak. Yeah that was an unfair break for big Z. I don’t trust any of the next gen to actually win slam matches against the big 2 though. Can’t just chalk it up as a win when he was one set down even.

Yeah couple of my friends ran into Novak having a coffee on his own in Melbourne after winning years ago, they asked for a pic but he was incognito and politely declined because he didn't wanna draw attention. Nice guy I'm sure
