well thats prolly why series 1 quality control seems to be way better. my first 2 elite controllers were series 1. my first controller lasted me the longest and has prolly been abused the most and the only defect was the grips coming off like yours. it failing was my fault because i left it charging while going away for a trip and i came back to the charge port being fried . my 2nd elite started to develop some serious stick drift later down the line so i finally decided to trade it in towards a series 2. Series 2 def feels better but man that s*** didnt even last 6 months of casual gaming before both the left and right bumpers started to become unresponsive.
