Mmm depends.. I'm in Fort Collins (CO) and it is definitely a small town, but I make enough for rent and a little more here. Other college towns like Omaha and Lincoln are bigger and more like a small city. Omaha or Lincoln Nebraska you could probably make a decent amount.

And there are a lot of surrounding areas that aren't too far that would be decently cheap.
