Well to be fair the streaming era has changed how people consume music and the new artists have adapted

Which has resulted in not really caring about putting out a focused, polished project and more about throwing s*** at the wall and hoping something catches on.

but the streaming era has given more niche artists an audience that would've never been given a chance in any earlier era.

You think a rapper type like Mike/Current earl/navy blue could've had success in the early 2010s? When Death Grips and Cherry Bomb were being killed for having intentionally bad mixing?

Exactly. 2010s Rappers lack pioneering skills to help usher in the next big rappers.

    Sad cause drake had Wayne
    Kendrick had Dr.dre
    Jcole had Hov

oh my goodness yall niggas are out of touch.

The reason there isn't "gatekeepers" like that anymore is because radio is no longer pigeonholing and forcing an audience to only listen to 2 or 3 rappers only.

    Niggas have a choice now.

Yall d***ride the "big 3" so much that yall forget how many just as great rappers had to get left behind or s***ted on in order for those big 3 to be as lauded as they are. To this day I cringe thinking at how Big K.R.I.T. and J Cole are literally neck and neck as far as skills and production and overall talent goes (and IMO. KRIT tips the scales in his favor especially when it comes to singing.) but no, we s*** on KRIT for the weirdest reasons.

It's sooooo many talented niggas in the blog era that got left behind. His personality aint helped, but Wale IS up there as far as one of the best rappers of his era. We should be greatful we're now in an era where no longer is the audience forced to gather around just one artist that might cater to what they want some of the time, when they can just go to an artist that actually fufills their niche.

Damn I just want someone with fresh bars and flow. Like imagine a so far gone or a section 80 or Friday night lights. Omfg.

Let’s get back to the bars. That’s the only way raps going to come out of the f***ing creative sinkhole it’s in rn. Lol I’m such a boomer.

Put up or shut up then.

And I'ma keep it a buck. I don't like how niggas act like just because it's in a melody or in autotune that these new niggas ain't rapping and spitting bars too.

Like Kodak Black don't exist. Like Youngboy aint spit his heart out on that 1st verse of Story of OJ remix (oh wait "he aint all the way technically on beat so we can't f*** with it" while at the same time we complain about rappers having the same flows)

Like Lil' Baby aint been on a historic feature run (2021 aint close to being over but his Wants and Needs verse is up there for my top favorite) S***, his Crash Talk verse is what made me a fan.

Like DaBaby and Meg don't be rappin.

I'm sure majority of niggas b****ing in this thread are around our mid 20s. (i'm 26.) yall in that big a rush to become washed?

    I'd like to think so.

All you need is an audience loyal enough to support your bandcamp (which artists makes way more money off of in total) independent and you can be pretty successful. I'm sure MIKE and navy both eating way good off that.

Mainstream rap is mid by nature because it’s just focus group tested s*** made by rappers who are strictly in it for the money. Stop expecting another ye or Wayne. The era of unique mainstream rappers is over. Now listen to the audio pig slop and like it.

Nah but fr everything underground is doing pretty well right now, and im not just talking about neo-dust

Give me some underground artist to check out that aren't very old school focused

this thread or a variation of it gets made every other week, you have access to streaming services with an incredible abundance of music, find artists that suite your tastes instead of focusing on what the wide majority of people enjoy. This is a music forum yet I see little to no dialogue about music that people enjoy, it's depressing.

Idc much about the current mainstream rap landscape and I'm starting to feel somewhat out of touch but you don't see me complaining about it every other day, focusing so much onto that instead of music you actually enjoy is weird to me.
