The differences and changes have not been positive ones in their eyes.

this is a really dope and nuanced take. Like yea I loved Wayne but not all of his influence was positive

As a Wayne fan, I feel like this is a case where Wayne's influence is suspect only because Wayne was a once in a lifetime talent who could pull off what he did.

Wayne wasn't just an autotuned lean rapper or prototype for "mumble rap." The man was spitting tons of bars and had one of the greatest mixtape and feature runs in rap history. His weakness mainly lied in crafting good albums. The OG Carter Trilogy was quality(esp. C2) but the rest of his albums had room for improvement.

Many younger rappers who tried to follow in Wayne's footsteps focused on only one aspect of Wayne(usually aesthetic or voice based) instead of trying to tap into his ability to write good punchlines/bars, have a versatile flow, drop quality mixtapes, and keeping the spirit of hip hop alive.

It's similar to how some rappers who tried to copy Pac only jacked the flow and the bandana "Thug Life" look/persona instead of his soulful and poetic songwriting and charisma.
