fr but I kinda get it. Sanji has one of the best character arcs in the entire series but his bad moments are pretty bad and I can see why people wouldn't find his perv/simp gimmick to be all that funny after a while. Whole Cake really recontextualizes his entire character but that's so late into the series that it ends up being kinda silly to tell people to wait to understand him, especially when he's introduced so early. He's top 3 for sure tho

The pervert trope is just a cultural thing that some people aren’t accustom to. His bad moments are still just jokes. The audience in Japan isn’t criticizing the stuff in Thriller Bark that some people in the west bring up. They don’t see it as a negative character trait, it’s just a gag to them. Even if the gag gets old, I do think that Oda finds clever ways to switch it up. I remember when I first read Fishman Island and Oda literally uses the blood loss from the nose bleed as a real plot point and I thought that was really clever and funny. Sanji’s probably one of the most layered characters in the crew beyond the surface level gags. I think he has a lot of great moments in between his heavy character focused stuff early on and the later development in Whole Cake.

Yeah the pervert anime trope in general hasn't aged that well. And the fact we're talking about a series that's been around since 97 doesn't help. It's a product of it's era and I can see a lot new people that are just getting into anime not understanding and being turned off by that.

I don’t get the “hasn’t aged well” argument. It’s a different cultural thing. It’s not like it’s not still frequently used in Japanese media. The audience over there doesn’t think it’s a problem. There’s entire genres built around it. They don’t view it as predatory or problematic, they view it as juvenile and playful. It’s like a slapstick gag over here. Obviously poking someone’s eyes out like the three stooges isn’t condoned here and neither is the behavior of characters like Sanji.

Yeah, that's over there in Japan, but if we're talking about people in the west that are just getting into it and don't have that context, from their perspective and standards it hasn't aged well.

Yeah I gotcha. I’m just saying maybe they should be provided that context. It’s important to have some understanding of another culture and their sensibilities when consuming their art.
