If we're going to have this talk, we're also gonna have to have an uncomfortable conversation on how most of these artists rely on other people to build an aesthetic for them and do the heavy lifting, hence why everything feels so like a copy/building off the past

Most of these creatives aren't even treated properly either lol

Here's the thing, are we trying to be rappers or pop stars. I really think the last thing this genre needs is more people striving for that.

i think it just needs more people like Mink who care a lot about the art itself, and the music, and aren't entirely financially motivated

Feel like this gen is the exact one for that unlike the street rap wave and some of the 2016-2018 wave which is why I like it great shout on mink people like him, Jim legxacy, che, osama, xav, untiljapan, doechii clearly do it for the art and are passionate about what they love and don’t wanna compromise their vision

I heavily disagree these new artists do want to be the biggest, I mean a lot of them are literally instantly pigeon-holed within a comparison to a bigger act, much like how Osama Season caused instant comparisons prior to Ken dropping AGC, and then facing instant backlash + industry blackball behavior with Ken telling producers not to give him beats lmao

Che & Osama have been pretty public too about wanting to be big, in their recent interviews, from Osama saying he wants to headline not just be a name on a festival list, and Che saying he intends on going mainstream around the release of RIB and even went on to say that he hates the underground term because he feels like it places him in a box

I don't think commercial appeal is what will make people take rap serious, I just think it's time for a new unavoidable face like the 2010s had. The 2020s don't have a Tyler, Rocky, Kendrick level figure yet, is all I'm saying

And part of the reason a lot of these new artists don't think in that punk manner like you described anymore, when it comes to them not wanting to be "big" and anti-label (pretty much any new rapper that's bubbling is signed to something nowadays) is because of how fast the discovery is for these acts, causing a lot of labels / A&Rs having such a fast point of access in pursuing these underground acts

Now that you bring up that first point about the underground not wanting to be that big / tied to labels, it makes me miss acts like Black Kray who were purposefully anti that. Imo that ideology has faded since labels are not very important anymore, hold little weight when it comes in the actual momentum build / blow up of musicians, and really just is a bank to musicians at this point.

Not every artist has to really put that much thought into each release, but the ones that aim to be this huge, unavoidable star do. At the moment many have the thought to be, but ultimately go with the flow, and don't plan grandiose rollouts. I'm just of the opinion that if someone did, it would be pretty legendary and in my opinion: punk. It's something that not even someone like Carti was able to do (WLR and Music were messes of rollouts). But in a way...Carti being so haphazard with his releases is legendary and rebellious in it's own way...
    So much to think about...

The label point I wouldn’t fully agree with tbh there’s more independent artists than ever and people signed to indie labels and those who are signed it’s not interfering with their vision at all they aren’t getting songs from the label like asap rocky out the gate with a 3 mil dollar deal having to sacrifice an album for radio hits, I do know che and osama wanna be big yea but that’s on their terms not the way someone like big Sean does lol to say a spectacle of highly controlled more traditional ways of putting out music is more rebellious somehow I inherently disagree with these are rappers not pop stars not everyone is trying to be the face of the genre that’s the thing u don’t need to appeal to everybody and clearly che isn’t making rest in bass thinking oh I gotta have a song for everyone otherwise it wouldn’t be as good as it is I do agree with a lot of your other points tho def and I do think that type of rollout is something I want from ppl like Osamason but I think they just need to be in a dif phase of their career for that I don’t think it’s that time yet. U gotta understand man big rollouts ARE a label thing that’s just a old industry budget event thing that only happens if ur huge and have crazy budget

How do u know he don’t know or care about that s*** what an ignorant assumption to me u don’t know this person or anything. The pop matar video has literal diary entries from when he was a kid.

If u pay attention he has nuggets of vulnerability on every project so far, even though that isn’t his thing, I’ve never seen him talk about guns or d**** in his interviews.

And tbh I don’t think I needa know more than that for him or his music to have personality.

Buddy just likes to be in his shell till recently, he’s a positive music nerd that likes to play with his cats and s*** then lets loose in the studio, troubled past and used to act tough. Chill guy idk

I think the distinction both of you guys were trying to come to is that Osama differs from his peers as he is a lot more open to communication and interviews instead of the "mysterious" gimmick.

That in of itself is probably the differentiating factor, but I get where you're coming from as well because in actuality he just seems down to earth more than anything compared to his peers.

Here's the thing, are we trying to be rappers or pop stars. I really think the last thing this genre needs is more people striving for that.

The point I was initially speaking to wasn't really about artists making sacrifices in order to reach further audiences.

If anything, I'm speaking to the figures like a prime-Kanye or even what Charli's doing as he mentioned who are creative on their own terms and are reaching a lot of people.

I agree with you that a lot of aesthetics and branding are often very shallow in usage, but I also said that it's just really going to have to take an almost uncompromising artist who has a clear vision for what they want to do in order to achieve these things. Whether that vision is accomplished all by themselves or with a team of others.
