Yeah but it’s incredibly reductive to say oh, these two films about Asian family dynamics feature cold, harsh, mothers, therefore, they’re basically the same. If you wanna play that game, where you just cherry pick a couple plot points, and use them to dismiss a film by comparison, we could do that for most any film. It’s very arbitrary.

Thing is films copy other films structure/plots all the time. Rian Johnson talked about this that when he wrote Looper he basically wrote out all the beats for the movie "Witness" and mimicked it beat for beat but just put his own modern twist with the sci-fi time travel s***. The whole "Switch from the city location to a more rural location at the mid-point" he took directly from the Witness movie

You get away with it when you steal from another genre or time period. So you take the beats of a pixar movie, lets say Toy Story and turn it into an adult film and remix it to the point it doesn't look like you're copying. And vise versa with disney movies copying adult movies but making them kid friendly.

With all that being said it kind of cheapens the films to say "oh it's a live action disney film" because Disney isn't the creators of these "Plot lines"..Disney is just as guilty of stealing from other movies too.

Anyways, TAR’s gotta get a screenplay nom, right?

    Based off the movie, 100%

Based off the actual screenplay, idk, that s*** looks like a chore to read tbh. Im so turned off by the font and big chunks of action

Haha, that’s a good point. Remixing, resampling, rewriting… It’s all fair game. I think it only becomes a problem if it breaks immersion. If you’re constantly pulled out of the film by thinking, this reminds me of this other film, that’s a bit annoying. That happened with Babylon, but even then, I ended up falling for that movie.

With Babylon i'm not sure if you're referring to Wolf of wall street. I know alotta folks went in comparing it to that. Which it doesn't help when the trailer is full of scene of the big ass party of folks d***ged up and thats all early critics kept saying "Oh its WOWS but in hollywood!!"

Avatar 1 had it bad too with the Pocahontas comparisons

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for creative formatting. Nightcrawler is one of my recent favorite scripts just off formatting alone. It reads so easy. And I personally use mini-slugs over full slugs like Gilroy does, William Goldman and Coen brothers.

But Todd's script. Yeah idk. I'm big on "having the pages look pretty" like besides the actual writing being good, the actual presentation has to be attractive

You don't understand how inspired I was by the movie just starting. No opening credits, no company logos. The movie just starts. Seen that s*** as a kid and said "yeah I wanna do a movie like that where it just starts in the middle of action"

I think the Wolf of Wall Street / Once Upon a Time in Hollywood mashup is an easy way to describe it to give people a general sort of idea. But I honestly kept thinking of PTA movies like Boogie Nights. The specific way that it whip pans, or quick zooms, with the lil lens flare. And then there’s the scene that has the energy of the cocaine deal. And the large cast of characters spiraling out, but really, they’re family, and it’s about the end of an era.

Oh damn. Honestly I don't notice similarities of camera movements and technical stuff when I'm watching a film. I usually don't see it unless I'm studying more directorial type stuff. That might be a gift and a curse for you lol.

I normally only notice similarities if the film has an obvious structure or storyline to another film.

    Fraser huh

I would prefer to see Fraser to win, just because it feels more meaningful with him falling off and finally having a comeback season.

But I do slightly prefer Farrells performance more and liked Banshees way more than Whale.

Word I'll definitely lookout for it next time i watch Babylon.

Boogie nights is great. But even as great as it is, that film also gets compared to Goodfellas.

Huh. Yeah, I also like a screenplay that functions like a piece of art in itself, and not just a manual. I’ll have to give Nightcrawler a read. I want to get into the habit of reading more scripts in general.

Exactly bro it's a piece of art. Tarantino has a quote where he says something like "When I'm done with a script I want it to be where I can just leave it like that and not shoot a film and the script can stand alone as it's own piece" (Paraphrasing)

Definitely, try and read a couple scripts a week. They go by quickly honestly. Usually I'll read a script while watching the film. And it teaches you how certain scenes get written.

Fablemans is what you'd expect. Straight and narrow family drama film. Cleanly shot, edited and written. Safe. Predictable. Enjoyable with the fam. But Steven is a masterclass when it comes to that lane.

100%...I'm a hands on learner. I rather learn from how other successful writers write. I've google'd so many "Coen brothers writing process" type searches.

But probably the best thing my screenwriting school did was put me more in a character driven mindset. I always wanted to do character pieces but I would go about it from a plot standpoint and they were good at pointing out how s*** was too plot heavy
