If you are a prestigious award organization like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and you have a legendary filmmaker nominated for his first film post-retirement and you also have a sequel to an animated super-hero series that already won an Oscar before....who do you think the Academy is going to give the award to? Legendary filmmaker his first return since retiring...or the superhero movie?

these award shows don't really care about animation or foreigners tho tbh. they'll give it to suoer hero s*** cuz they're not as strict with their "standards" with this catergory. if you had said straight up they were going to give it to Miyazaki as a legacy pick I'd be with you.

but it was still the better movie and deserved to win.
