Japan is also commonly homophobic/transphobic IIRC, and Kojima and his studio have been very progressive with that kind of thing publicly which is cool to see.

Many of his games have tons of queer representation in ways that are both tongue-in-cheek and serious. Some people think he makes too much fun of the idea, but the idea of bringing it up, let alone in comedic or normalized ways, is something other developers wouldn't want to do. Kojima doesn't sexualize or do anything to women in-game that he's not willing to do (and sometimes already does do) to men lmao.
