    Male palm cockatoos create drumsticks from twigs and play a rhythm on their nesting tree in an attempt to attract a mate. Every male cockatoo's drumstick is unique, and different males have different preferences for what size of twig and material they like to use. Fathers spend several years teaching their sons how to make these drumsticks. They are the only animal other than human beings to make musical instruments.

    Scientists think that the drum beat tells female cockatoos something about the male's desirability. Possibly the female can determine the size and depth of his nest from its acoustics.

    i think i remember reading that birds also understand reverb and echoes. they'll sing longer notes in more open spaces because the openness will reverbate the longer notes and sing shorter notes in more dense shrubbery because theres a tighter packed sound. birds are little artists fr
