That said, I think Drake was going for the calling Kendrick "fake deep" angle but fumbled it with shock value.
Jay tried to do a similar thing to Nas during their beef.
On Blueprint 2, he said:

It's a similar tactic of trying to call out of conscious rapper for being a hypocrite or positioning himself as pro-Black.
In both Drake and Jay's cases, it failed because Kendrick and Nas always showcased their flaws and how multi-faceted they are.
But it worked more effectively when Common dissed Ice Cube because Cube used to be a notorious flip flopper not much different from Snoop today.
I don’t think you can compare Jay-Z saying that to Drake. Yeah in that Jay-Z/Nas battle you’d say Jay was the commercial rapper and Nas the more lyricist/real hip hop or whatever, but Drake is next level commercial. Like has he ever rapped even a single bar about anything other than himself and his own relationships? I’m not even criticizing him for it, but when he says something like that it comes off like he’s disrespecting the idea that music can ever have a message about the larger world because paired with his discography that seems to be how he feels.
