I’d argue Sean Penn is the real protagonist of the movie, he’s the one with the actual goal here that we’re following. Similar to Thanos in Infinity War.

At a certain point I started to wonder why everyone says he should win Supporting Actor when he probably has the most screen time in the movie.

Guess it’s the same as Waltz winning for Inglourious Basterds when he’s got the most screen time. Bad guys always go in Supporting
