I always felt inherent vice was deeply unserious, a very funny and wild adventure, almost feeling like a stoner buddy comedy at times. That’s hilarious, if they find that film pretentious I’d almost say they took it too seriously lol
The master is trippy but I wouldn’t say pretentious works to describe the film itself, although Hoffman plays a pretentious man, very well I might add.
Overall it just feels like pretentious is a new placeholder for weird or slightly indulgent lol
yeah exactly. personally im not super deep and didnt go to art school or film school so id feel pretentious to call something pretentious. but I alway felt theres one thing that definitely deserved the label;

Wasn’t it inspired by Short Cuts?
yeah just wasnt sure if he meant the dogshit musical segment specifically
watching anything from Hollywood really. or movies in general. really observing any art is kinda cosigning anything the creator ever depicted.

Yeah the musical section is the only part I disliked. Everything else in Magnolia is great and prolly my favorite Tom Cruise role
which ones were pretentious? I’ve seen all of his films except licorice pizza
Can't think of what's more pretentious, pta putting the exodus plague raining frogs into the end of Magnolia or him claiming that he didn't even know that was in the Bible until after he made the movie

Was Short Cuts any good ? Altman is hit or miss for me but some of the stories are from one of my fav author

Yeah, you're a hard one to predict with Altman but I could see you appreciating the characters and that washed out early 90s cinnamontography

He's a movie nerd not a Bible nerd
this scene, you f***ing kidding me goated film
Is there anybody that consistently gets better performances out of his actors? Actual question cause I don't think there is
Honestly the 90s cinematography was mid tbh

Tarantino comes to mind, but I have to agree overall

I learned about it from Magnolia and Short Cuts
was raised by a fervently anti religious parents so everything I've learned about the Bible I learned from Bob Dylan lyrics and movies and s***
Tarantino comes to mind, but I have to agree overall
Bergman also comes to mind but Paul gotta be in the top 5 maybe 3 ever
I wish Paul got a chance to direct Nicholson
probably too late
yeah by like 12 years lol
yeah by like 12 years lol
Michael Caine is 4 years older than Jack
it's not impossible. Especially over the last 12 years. Big a loss for us that he didn't want to keep working.
reason I wanted viggo to be in this he’s getting old
I feel like he still has a good amount of roles ahead of him

he’s built different tbh, also his roles always somewhat marginal I don’t remember the last time Nicholson showed vitality on screen….than again I never really peeped the old guy buddy movies he did with Morgan Freeman
