The themes and subtext are very powerful for black Americans

uncut gems rewatches are a bit diff for me but probably need some time away

Some critiques about how black women are portrayed in this film are valid. That being said… the last tweet okay?? Yea no s***! Her character did some f***ed up s*** and that’s okay!! She wasn’t a role model in the film. People don’t only win awards because they play characters that are role models or admirable or “good representation”. Why are we all 12 now? Why do we all act like we’re 12 years old?

They are trying to say black people are only rewarded for stereotypes and bad characters

I don't know why I'm getting mad about the discourse but Teyana Taylor winning for let's say... idk A Thousand and One where she plays a struggling single mother is stereotypical as well. great film obviously a lot more nuanced than the surface but you could still make that argument but is the only difference is that the film was directed and written by a black woman? does that make the character less stereotypical? Would there be the same discourse if she was nominated/won for that??

Crazy how much more of this discourse emerged once the movie hit streaming, know why? Cuz ppl were then able to share short clips of the movie so ppl who just like to follow whatever twitter narratives are getting engagement could jump in after watching a few random clips
