The film includes a scene showing two gay men who love each other but are obviously unhappy because one of them is more worried about how society will respond to their identities. This is shown right before Alanna runs off to find Gary (they run off to find each other but Alanna has been shown to question her desire for Gary much more than vice versa, which feels slightly important because she was perhaps inspired a little bit by the other man's sadness) and they kiss and she says she loves him before the movie ends. That seems like a weird juxtaposition to include, because the taboo surrounding gay relationships (particularly for the 70s) is of a very different nature compared to the taboo of the age gap here
nambla yakubian devilry
Not sure how I feel about that ending
Think of it like this.
Have you ever loved someone really intensely in some moment?
And did u realize it had nothing to do with sex, and everything to do with your connection as two people on this earth?
That’s what it is.
Those two people are bound together, through space and time.
I think they will figure out that they work best as friends.
Would this convo be different if you switched the genders?
Yes
Maybe we do switch them
Maybe we sit with that
And have an honest conversation about that
If you switch them, you have to be naive to think that people are gonna see the relationship in the best possible light
A man having a friendship with a 15 year old, that already seems predatory to us, based on how this world works
It isn’t that scenario tho
And the sexes are different
This is complicated stuff
So tricky
Morally, what do we make of it?
The power dynamic between the two feels pretty level
Respect is established on both sides
I dunno, I’m just rambling, but I’m trying to find an honest path forward with my confused thoughts
You told me your favourite movie is Planet Of The Apes did you not?
What’s wrong with Planet of The Apes? Dope sci-fi story.
Gatekeeping is hatekeeping.

Fair. I thought that too.

To be honest bro sometimes I feel like we put way more thought into these films than the actual director. Dope write up none the less tho
This crazy cuz this how niggas feel about his weak ass albums
This is probably PTA’s worst film, but that’s ok- it’s still a solid addition to his filmography. At least it’s something different for him, refreshingly… normal
Saw PTA was a guest host of TCM yesterday and introduced two movies. Since LP was based off a real-life film producer who worked with Tom Hanks and a child actor too. He was in the movie called Yours, Mines, and Ours and PTA shared a story about him to which it makes sense. I knew he cites Eastwood's Breezy as an inspiration to LP.

This. Although I still like it more than Hard Eight.
What was up with the long haired stalker guy? Thought it was a Taxi Driver reference but then hes at Wachs dinner with his bf, was he planning to assasinate him?
I thought that too at first but idk I read it as like
The physical manifestation of the councilman’s fears— like how all the newspaper ppl were asking him about his relationship status and what not. Clearly people are suspicious and really want to know, and he’s there to make that paranoia more tangible and felt by the audience??? Like the councilman literally has people tailing him around trying to find what’s up
And I think he looks super foreboding at first bc Alana has no clue what’s up and only realizes after, so all of the breadcrumbs seem just kinda weird at first to both her and us
Rewatched the whole PTA filmography between Xmas and now. Seeing this tomorrow
Not sure if it’ll hurt this movie viewing experience because I’m gonna inherently compare it to so much amazing stuff but man what a career
Just got out of seeing this.
It was really good. Great even. Most of the performances were great and this being Alana’s debut film is wild because she’s really good. Along with PSH’s son.
Bradley stole the show when he came into the movie.
Cinematography, directing, writing, all great. This film captured early 70s LA wonderfully.
The whole age gap thing was getting to me. I feel like at one point the film tried to make Alana the antagonist but then reverted.
The chemistry between Gary and Alana was great but it felt wrong as hell too. I want to think that was the point but…
Also the Asian accent thing bothered me but I would like to think that was more to satirize casual racism.
Overall I think if they aged up Gary I would’ve been fine with it and felt less squirmy about it lmao
4.5/5 tho
Yeah to me it was more just
Painting the era in a way? Because s*** like that probably happened in that time period lmao and no one would bat an eye. To me it mainly illustrates the time period and such esp since nixons mentioned later with all the gas s***. I think that’s valid like… it would be kinda weird to paint over the past as of none of this s*** happened than to say, it did happen and it wasn’t particularly nice. Though when I watched it I feel like most people were laughing at the jokes so… maybe I’m bugging lol.
Additionally, I think it also ties into braey Cooper’s character—these people are allowed to live in a completely inacceptable way and no one really cares. Which makes the fact that the councilman has to be so secretive ironic.
In a way I think it also shows that neither of the main character is particularly worldly or whatever. Like Alana has no clue what Japanese food is and to everyone else is dumb as bricks (eg to Sean penn’s character). But she thinks the guy is dumb as bricks, that he has no idea what’s going on in the world (oil shortage on the news scene). None of the characters are able to understand Japanese food/the restaurant deeply except to say “come here for Japanese waitresses in kimonos”

Don’t expect much tbh. It ain’t topPTA but very reminiscent of Boogie Nights and Inherent Vice. Great experience though

Accidentally saw them at a music festival a few years ago (nearly 8
) and got the impression they are some super cool chicks with some super long legs
not crazy about their songs but they can rock out
Not surprised PTA saw the potential
