I disagree with your take on how he portrayed it sorry you think I'm ignorant

If you remove the talk of age from the film would you think anything was morally wrong or just that the chick was just playing hard to get but eventually they finally fall in love?

To me the answer is the latter, if there was no mention of their age I wouldn’t think anything was wrong because of how the film is presented.

I understand that criticism. Personally I find that it’s not necessarily his job to show the viewer like, hey, by the way, this is bad behavior. I think the viewer can make that decision for themselves. He’s just telling a story. I don’t see it as the movie co-signing the behavior at all, just showing characters and events that happen to them. But I do get how you feel

I agree I don’t think it’s his job to blatantly say HEY THIS IS WRONG. But when you present that type of behavior as a cute romance flick and ALSO defend it as if the characters did nothing wrong. That makes me question it big time. Cus PTA himself doesn’t even believe there’s any bad behavior involved.

If you remove any talk of age? Its not a silent film how else would it be implied

Again I've only seen it once but didn't she tell him on the first scene she's way too old for him

They do explicitly go out of their way to mention both of their ages at different points

Ngl I think the movie does a good job of most of this with all the stuff portrayed.

The racist store owner talking to his Japanese wives,
Joel Wachs being closeted and using Alana as a beard,
The fact that no one even says s*** about Gary smoking at age 15
The comments about Alana’s Jewish features and her religion,
Alana being casually sexually harassed by
The photographer earlier on in the movie when he slaps her ass and she clearly feels uncomfortable
And just the general machismo of a lot of the men in this movie

are all pretty cut and dry and are pretty much just showing us how casual a lot of that s*** we deem as wild now was accepted back then.

The reason I like a lot of the movie is cuz I like hangout movies in general but early on in the thread when I initially saw the movie I actually said I would’ve rated the movie higher if they changed the ending.

Part of me wonders if the ending is meant to
symbolize that Alana and Gary have this “arrested development” thing going on where they both are trying to escape the need to grow up and that the relationship won’t last or something. Gary calling her his wife and her just looking at him like he’s stupid makes me consider that.

But yea I can understand someone not vibing with this movie cuz of said ending.

Lowkey I feel like if you just change the ending to them hugging platonically or making Gary 18 or something this could’ve been avoided lol

That’s the thing they showcased how wrong racism and homophobia is but skipped passed the underage romance and used that as the crutch of the story. Which looks like a cute little romance film.

Even if you remove the ending you still have her going on a date with dude even tho it’s wrong. Showing him her b****. Getting extremely jealous when he hangs out with girls his own age. And all the other subtle flirting. The kiss at the end and “I love you” just solidifies what we ALL KNOW “this b**** really 25 falling in love with a 15 year old da f***

Hence why I said they should’ve made him older to avoid this whole thing.

At the very least with him being 18 it becomes a whole “I’m older than you, I’m more mature” thing more than a “you’re underage thing”

Fam I’m not saying “turn this into a silent film”….we having a real convo or you just gonna keep being a d***?

What I’m saying is, my point has been the movie is portrayed as a cute romance film and never that the Alana character is in the wrong. You said you disagree.

So I’m asking if you remove any implications of the age gap, what in the film displays that she is morally wrong? In red rocket if you remove implications of the age gap, the main character is still clearly displayed as a creep. Her saying “I’m 17” isn’t needed because of the type of film Sean presented.

That’s been my entire point of why I dislike the film, that it’s presented as a cute romance flick where she’s playing hard to get but eventually Gary gets her. You said you disagree, so I’m asking where in the film does PTA display she’s morally wrong as a character? And how is that even possible when PTA himself doesn’t think Alana is in the wrong…..

And I agree but they didn’t do that. Which is why the argument is being had ITT rn.

I’m ok with this subject matter being presented as long as it’s not being wrapped up as a cute romance film.

Sundance this year has a film called “palm trees” that tackles this subject matter. I haven’t seen it yet but basically from what I’ve heard it’s from the perspective of an underage female and a female director. And it’s meant to bring forth awareness of real life s*** that happens.

I have no problem supporting something like that because you know where the film stands on its controversial topic and it’s not meant to confuse the audience.

I don’t need my art spoon fed to me but things like Pedo s*** and r*pe I draw the line with as far as “leaving it up for interpretation”

Nah I feel you. I mean I’m like you I enjoy hang out movies too. But I ain’t tryna hang out with no Pedo for 2 hours lmao

So yeah PTA missed the mark big time with this. But imagine if he made a hang out type movie with Bradley’s character OMG.

Honestly this is how you fix this movie:
Make Alana and Gary strictly brother sister vibes, ACTUAL friend vibes.
    Put a lot more Bradley
and tweak the story around to fit the new adjustments
