You’re arguing “that’s how language works” therefore we “recognize” it as an “umbrella” term when it’s not lol. Not sure what the point in bringing up your credentials were as if that makes you right lol I could mention that I’m a cryptologist language a***yst with a top secret security clearance doesn’t mean every argument I make about languages is right loool.

i know what i’m talking about when discussing linguistics and how languages evolve, i was an anthropology major in undergrad. i promise you, this is the primary way that languages evolve: through the way that people commonly speak, regardless of if what they said was previously “correct” to say.

it doesn’t matter if they don’t know “ephebophilia” and “hebephilia” are words, the fact that it’s extremely common to use “pedophilia” to describe all three is exactly what makes it an umbrella term. i’m not gonna argue with you any further on this. your entire argument is just “they don’t know the other words exist” & i’m telling you that doesn’t matter. that’s how language evolves.

you don’t see ephebiatricians nor hebetricians do you? no, only pediatricians. it’s an umbrella term.

I know how language works but this specific instance isn’t an example of that.
