    It's the psychological theory that we move through "stages" at different points in life, with "successful" completion through each stage leading to more happiness and fulfillment in life; while failure to successfully move through stages leads to increased unhappiness.

    But one of the later (40+) stages is generativity vs stagnation, with generativity being "leaving your mark on the world", whether that be through stuff like work or family.
