we often make the claim that younger audiences cannot accurately characterize or rate music because of their lack of exposure to other types of music
but if young people gravitate to ONE kind of music, given all of the options, doesnt that sort of objectively state that the current/new music is the best? Cus if it wasnt they would listen to something else? IG u can say that theyre following trends, which is probably true, but i think this sort of ignores the advancements made in music
i think most kids like artists like osamason, che, ken carson, many more youve probably never heard of etc. As a 20s aged person i also love that s***. i think its popular because it is the most advanced form of music to date. as far as nailing all of the boxes of making interesting music.
last night i was listening to old wu tang clan. i realized that many properties of that music are also true for new artists. the de-novo production, the rough mix, the emphasis on creativity and maxing out the facade that is the rappers identity. I think people overlook new underground music because its evolved so fast into these weird territories. but theres clearly a wealth of new music that hasnt been properly documented
sorry for the triple post but what rly opened my mind was the kenny beats beat battles. u had artists making music on very high levels. these are unknown producers. its obvious the pipeline to success is broken, and new music is sorta overlooked. these guys could produce kanye level albums and no one would bat an eye
Didn't like the 1st post
Some interesting ideas in the 2nd post
There was some very skillful production in those Kenny Beats beat battle videos, although it takes more than skilled production to make a Kanye level album, curation & vision &, awareness of what sounds fit the vision are necessary
I'm meal prepping 8 portions while viewing this thread, hence the sporadic edits

i like how u sensed my response coming and answered proactively

I've got that 6th sense homie
The point about 'younger people gravitate to the newer music probably means that that music is objectively the best'
Being rebellious (leading to rebelling against music older people told you was great), wanting to relate to the artist, wanting to find yourself etc. seem like more likely reasons for young people gravitating to newer music
heres a pleasant beat to listen to while browsing my thread

The pipeline to success is definitely broken, but as someone noted in a post (a point that has become a topic in recent years) the other day, attention is considered a resource these days and the most likely way to break through is to find a way to grab your intended audience's attention
The reassessment of old music by notable artists after they finally get success has always been a clear look at this idea
Some examples
JPEGMAFIA's Ghost Pop Tape gaining massive underground acclaim in the years after he finally achieved success
or people trying to attribute the creation of Vaporwave to him when going back to look at oldest releases
Another one, Nourished By Time released the song Romance In Me years ago but it became really appreciated when it was released as if it was a new track on the EP he released after finally attaining something success
(Even folks who went back through his discography after becoming fans didn't really speak about it until it was released as if it was a new track)

Yea this makes sense, i agree theres a wealth of old music 2 that gets rediscovered, its all the same process just at different points, the pipeline died over a decade ago we are just now seeing the results
I encourage u to be open minded when exploring new music

Yea but my point is if the music is bad they wouldnt show up
When i was a teen it was weeknd, tame impala, toro y moi, odd future etc all great artists, u dont get that connection unless the music hits
