It’s the culmination of Plato’s work, and really does well to communicate all the ideas Socrates laid bare before. It’s like a meditation on life through Socrates eyes. Socrates ponders the truth and his nature as a philosopher. Not to mention the scene and setting. Socrates understands it’s his last days and sees clearly the beauty of it all

I haven’t read specifically about “Nietzsche commentary on the life denial of Socrates.” But as far as I have read in regards to Nietzsches perception of Socrates, I shall speak. I think Nietzsche sets out to rip down all great men so he can build a new and greater man. He sees those men and philosophies like mountains he must climb and look down upon. Specifically alluding to this in Thus Spake… In order to understand Nietzsche you must understand his mission. If he can’t look down upon all before him he has failed. With that aside, we can see Nietzsche as the original existentialist citing his naturalism. The self is there, with the body. This imperfection is the truth. It’s nature. Socrates denies this. BUT! I think their relationship is very misunderstood. And this is why I cite Phaedo. If you look at all of Plato’s work before, you can perceive an inconsistency and hypocrisy. But in Phaedo it’s clear their mission is the same. Socrates was looking to over come the mountains before him and the nature of his republic (looking down on the “great men” of his day) and create the ultimate man (the philosopher king) and Nietzsche set out to do the same (the übermensch). In the Phaedo you truly witness thought and philosophy at its highest. A height Nietzsche sought to climb over. Socrates whole thing is virtue. Nietzsche whole thing is overcoming and reclaiming power to the will. And not being ruled over by morals or anything, but he doesn’t deny the beauty which morality may possess. Socrates in the same way doesn’t deny the beauty of life, but won’t be ruled by it. Hehe
