i dont mind that some people prefer godfather 2 to godfather 1, i mean its certainly a worthy sequel. but it annoys me that more than 50% of people prefer part 2.
godfather 1 is superior
I’ve given this some thought, they really are identical quality wise. I think people prefer part II because Michael is more compelling as a villain + part II is where the carnage/comeuppance really happens + the young Vito storyline

I've given this thought too.
Michael in GF1 is, to me, maybe the best character arc in cinema. From where he starts that movie to where he ends it as the godfather, it's so well told and epic. He is a different person entirely by the end of the movie.
The comp in GF2 would be De Niro as young Vito. This is a great origin story no doubt, and similarly he has an epic arc from sickly immigrant to godfather. But to me this arc, while great, is not as as compelling as Michael's. He basically kills the neighborhood boss and then becomes godfather. I like how he goes back and kills the boss in Italy, but still, this isn't Michael-level storytelling.
GF1 has an all time performance by Brando. De Niro is good as the young version but if we're ranking all time performances, De Niro is not anywhere close to Brando.
GF2 has Michael, who is again great and has a good story, but he starts the movie as the villain and ends it as the villain. No real character growth there. The arc for him in GF2 is he loses his family because of who he's become.
Anyway that was long winded but bottom line, Michael's arc in GF1 + Brando's performance are not quite matched in GF2.

I agree with you to a certain extent but feel he becomes even more ruthless throughout part II, as he trust less & less people, you’re right through the crucial character arc happens in part I
