Big Thief made one of my favorite albums of all time, so that's my #1. I can put that album on any time and be swept away with it
Cities Aviv dropped a sprawling masterpiece with Man Plays the Horn and that's gotten completely overlooked, probably my rap AOTY
Billy Woods, Black Country New Road, Alvvays, Weyes Blood, Alex G all absolute gems and great picks from this list
i need 2 peep this alex g album

Thank you
it's been a great year all around
Even Lemonade is kinda inconsistent. It's a great event album with memorable highs and a lot of background drama to hook you in but definitely flawed. 2016 had many albums that were better.
It’s an concept album with an intriguing storyline, lots of symbolism in the music AND more importantly in the film, it’s super ambitious and bold, critics love that.
what tracks would you say are the weakest?
i do agree though, 2016 definitely had some better albums
The whole middle section from Daddy Lessons to Forward kind of loses me to be honest. I don't think any of those songs are bad, but sequenced together, and with everything else being so good, I get tempted to skip around.
Why do people keep pretending Big Thief is anything special lol
because they are, album should've been higher
the fact that Laurel Hell beat out Ants From Up There says what i need to know about this publication
and they were completely right about that
once again -- has the popular culture moved on from hip hop at this point in your opinion?
Working for the Knife might be the only song I really remember off that Mitski album. Excellent song
I've never been a fan of her music like that tho

What do you mean by “popular culture”?
If you mean the writers of major publication like the ones that put out these EOY lists, then sure maybe.
But in terms of the general public and what kids/teens/YA are listening to then absolutely not.

It's definitely her weakest album since her debut. Not anything egregiously bad but the songs just aren't there.
I think that really intense, brittle, jarring production from songs like Your Best American Girl being absent doesn't help either. Makes everything feel flat, like she just made an album to make an album

ok i get where you're coming from

Flat is definitely the right word
And she kinda did retire or whatever so hey, maybe this first record back was a fluke lol
and they were completely right about that
im glad you enjoy it but i cant personally. it's her weakest album by far imo, even though Working For The Knife is pretty good
damn not even Fleet Foxes?
Yeah fleet foxes are cool
That’s basically the end of it tho

I think this is right. There was a period of time where hip hop was being championed by mainstream press as The Only Genre That Mattered but that time has passed. Obviously it's still commercially and socially relevant relevant regardless of the praise it gets.
The 'who' list
Will check out Florist I love their last album
The vibe is unmatched
I need to spend more time with it but if I made a top 50 it would probably be in there
Music is subjective so how do these lists get made. Especially when it's filled with s*** no one's heard
