my review for bad brains self titled

an old friend of mine who skateboarded and played guitar loved this f***ing band. bruh had posters and s*** of them in his room, the stereotypical white boy stoner type ya know.. he played them a quite a lot when we would get high and i enjoyed them. never gave them a proper listen though.

i see that this album has received a lot of praise over the years and rightfully so. this mf slap. i quite adore this "positive mental attitude" thing they've got going on.. very interesting. when "jah calling" came on it clicked.. this is the s*** that inspired sublime and 311 and then "leaving babylon" really dope s*** to mix punk and reggae like this on the same album.

i really enjoyed this.. i'm not well versed when it comes to punk as a genre but this s*** sounds great to me. after two full listens i would absolutely recommend this to someone else. also reading the lyrics gives me an extra layer of appreciation for this s***, it's damn near impossible to understand what the f*** is being said.. but these mfs were saying some poetic, thought provoking s***. hella dope.

    top 3 fav songs

    • leaving babylon

    • big take over (like wow this mf is turnt)

    • right brigade (that f***ing guitar solo b**** what)

honorable mention: i luv i jah

    least favorite song

    • N/A, every song is a slapper

The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me by Brand New

I wasn't able to do a deep dive/real review this week so these are just some quick, loose notes through a first listen:

    • Sowing Season: Chorus riff is strong and catchy. I like it
    • Millstone: I like the vocals, especially the chorus. Could see myself listening to this outside of this context
    • Jesus Christ: Depressing song. A little boring
    • Degausser: Not bad. The choir is cool
    • Limousine: I like it, has a "big" sound to it. Detailed. Kinda cool and atmospheric guitar at the end
    • You Won't Know: I like the tempo and energy. I appreciate their heavier tracks more in general
    • Welcome to Bangkok: Tom Clancy or Zero Dark Thirty vibes. I could see myself capturing Bin Laden to this. The shouting is cool and I like how it ends. Probably my favorite
    • Not the Sun: Vocals are good. I like how it tries for something a little different. Catchy chorus. Standout track
    • Luca: It's cool but I don't feel strongly about it. I feel like the breakdown and sudden crescendo towards the end of the song was pretty predictable, but cool
    • Untitled: Nostalgic and dreamy feeling, perfect length
    • Archers: Don't like the vocals at all or the drums. Reminds me a lot of some Fallout Boy type stuff and I'm not a fan of that
    • Handcuffs: Gentle sounding song, kinda soothing, I like the production

    Score: 6/10

    Random Notes:

    • Not a fan of this style of rock overall
    • Not an album I'd normally listen to but seems like it would be cool in a certain context, like in a gothic or gritty action movie

I really enjoyed reading this! The beginning had me crine teenage ol me really fw their whole aesthetic I wish I could write a review like this with such attention to detail mine pales in comparison I'm guessing you do this often? I'm glad you did enjoy it overall and appreciate the greatness in the percussion and riffs

As for the vocals, IMO Corey is one of the best vocalist in that genre but since u mentioned how you don't like metal in general I guess it would be hard convincing you otherwise

Thanks dude, glad you enjoyed I appreciate your review too! Legit it was cool seeing someone else's perspective on one of my fave albums, I don't write reviews much but I do enjoy it and this thread is good practice

Taylor's vocals on the more conventional melodic hooks are really good, I can totally see why he'd have that reputation, the growls aren't my thing but he's definitely skilled at them

    Crazy Frog presents Crazy Hits

Axel F - Let’s be honest, the only reason this album exists is off the strength of Axel F alone which might possibly be the first mainstream crossover internet meme ever. This is years before Rick rolling even became a thing. It’s possible that this song is solely responsible for revolutionizing the internet and ultimately destroying human civilization but time will tell. The “frog” sample was originally on The Insanity Test on ebaumsworld I believe. I’m dusty enough to have been around for that. This swedish producer took it, mixed it with the Beverly Hills cops theme and made it an EDM hit. An internet meme going #1 in almost all of Europe. It reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Axel F YouTube video has almost 4 billion views.

What can I say. The rest of the album goes. It’s impossible to take any of these songs seriously as “art”. They’re all infectious classic beats and classic samples with a meme frog over them. Somehow the frog doesn’t really ruin the vast majority of it. Would I listen to this album for personal pleasure? No. Absolutely not. Would I probably dance my ass off if any of these came on in the club? Yes, yes I would. This album still also goes absolutely crazy at kids parties too.Album also reached #1 in multiple European countries and peaked at 19 on the Billboard 200. It also dominated the ringtone game of the time for a hot hot minute. I just bumped this entire album this morning and enjoyed the hell out of it. Did not have the urge to skip or turn it off once.

Let’s be serious. In terms of cultural/meme impact alone, this album is getting a 10/10 from me. Truly an absolute classic for what it is. This will likely never be successfully replicated by any other artist ever again. The fact that this Swedish producer took a random internet meme sample and turned it into a successful international brand that put the world in a chokehold could be one of the most impressive musical feats ever.

UNDER THE PINK - TORI AMOS

    @HommeTelephone @op

Off the bat I gotta say this Isn't really the type of music I listen to at all, so bear with me while I try to review it.

Based on the opening track, Pretty Good Year, I wasn't sure this album wasn't going to be for me. Piano ballads have never really been my thing to be honest. I enjoyed the higher energy tracks like God, The Wrong Band, and Cornflake, and I especially enjoyed the heavier moments on songs like The Waitress and Space Dog, those two being tied for my favorite on the album. That being said, Tori made the tracks that weren't necessarily my style an enjoyable listen as well with her gorgeous voice and songwriting.

Personally, Ima give this one a 6/10. Genres not for me, but enjoyed it nonetheless.

First listen, raw thoughts. I do not like this. I dislike it. Report Back was an aight start, I can appreciate Ogden & Gizmo & the outro for the pace. But nothing here made me go "I like (something about) this". Not a project for me, I'm afraid. Those 20 minutes felt pretty long. I'm sorry for everything. Hope you like mine more.

Dam lmao for me it was the melodies that won me over. Wasn’t sure on it but a few choruses were stuck in my head so I kept going back. Hate it was a tough listen for you, but I enjoyed the cheeky review. Hot Mulligan review loading for tomorrow 🤝
