@Zoobooks man I feel really bad because I wrote a review and deleted it because it was just me giving my thoughts on each song and explaining why I didn't like the music.

It didn't feel fair but I can't lie to you man I hated every second of this. I tried giving a shot earlier in the week, wrote my review.. and was gonna submit it but decided against it..

But now that I'm listening to it again I dislike it even more and it's not meshing well with my high. I don't know what type of mood I have to be in to enjoy this but whatever that mood is.. I'm not in it right now. This s*** is giving me the worst kind of anxiety.

I tried listening on my home set up, tried it with headphones and even tried smoking to it in the car with the window down. It's just not for me.

I will say I do appreciate "The silver cord" though. That instrumental is hauntingly gorgeous. The lack of vocals is definitely why I love it though..

Sorry for not having much else to say, I feel really close minded but I think it's best I'm just honest. Thank you for recommending this though, maybe one day when I get into metal and learn how to appreciate it I will revisit this.

    Slowdive - Slowdive (2017)

Slowdive and MBV are a couple of my favorite bands after going down the shoegaze rabbit hole a few years back. Although I never played this album I’m glad it got recommended cuz it’s just as good as their other albums (but better than Pygmalion). 8 songs at 46 minutes is perfect for this style of music. The songs are heavy and they drag but in a good way. This album feels like a time capsule of a slow motion surfer film or a montage of 90’s home videos. I’d have to say Souvlaki is still their best but this one could give Just For A Day a run for it’s money.

    8/10

    Burial - Untrue

    Boom-boom tchk-umm b'dmm b'dmm ba-chk
    Boom-boom tchk-umm b'dmm b'dmm ba-chk
    Boom-boom tchk-umm b' Holding you...

    And we're home again.

Burial's Untrue is more than an album, it's a place, it's a universe. Through some kind of Sound Forge alchemy, the man stapled together pitch-shifted R&B samples, dubstep bass, and vinyl crackle in a precise combination to instantly transport the listener to the rainy streets of London. Untrue is walking home in the dark after getting bad news, it's seeing a train go past from an empty street, it's waiting at a bus stop with something heavy on your mind, no other artist bottles the romantic isolation of urban life like Burial.

If you've read anything about Burial you've heard this all before, but the power of his magic trick never diminishes. I grew up with this album, it's been a part of my life for over a decade now, and returning to it for this challenge was like a warm hug. My head has been filled with catchy wordless vocal melodies all week, I've been putting songs on throughout the day, it's so nice to be spending time with it again. The album's so perfect and fully-formed, he's speaking the same language as his debut but there's such a quantum leap in songwriting here that it feels like all the Burial you'll ever need. It's hard to overstate just how singular his voice is, you can't really take inspiration from him without sounding like you're outright copying.

A few things have stuck out on this listen, but something that has struck me from the very first is that this album, to my mind, has the greatest percussion sounds in the history of recorded music. The drums on this thing feel like a massage for your brain, just devastatingly, trance-inducingly good, nobody's done it better! Just one of those things you have to live with. This time around, the beauty of the ambient tracks has really come out, somehow those slow, beatless pieces are as catchy and immediate as the most danceable tracks. The opening build-up of Etched Headplate has a kind of early Michael Jackson swagger, it feels like an abstracted take on an Off the Wall track. I've really developed a new appreciation for addictive groove of Homeless, and In McDonalds is still one of the greatest track titles of all time.

After all this praise, I think my rating might be a surprise, there are some tracks I don't find as interesting, some go on for a bit too long, and in my view, Burial's best work came in his Kindred and Truant/Rough Sleeper EPs, where he expanded his style to a symphonic scale that leaves you awestruck, but if this was the only album he ever relased, Untrue would solidify Burial's place as one of the best producers of all time. 8.5/10
