The influences of Ovid's Metamorphoses on this recent track of Carti's is very clear. He understands that Roman historiography is hugely influenced by existing myth, which clouds our knowledge regularly, particularly regarding historians of the period like Livy. Ovid's subtle critique of the Augustan regime is a particularly timely one considering the fact that Donald Trump recently proved that his perception of the US presidency is quite tyrannical in the same ways Augustus Octavian saw his position in the Roman senate. The use of classical reference to compare Rome and the USA is a common one, which I think Carti uses well here. He manages to dissect the impact of leadership upon historiography incredibly well, while also examining numerous completely separate topics. Not only is it an excellent exhibition of Carti's knowledge of the classical world, but the next verse in which he examines Hayek's approach to economics is equally as thorough, and the transition between the two is so unbelievably smooth.
