You dont have to come with a different sound every time. Jay didnt and he wasn't generic. Neither was Nas. Neither was Em. But they are actual rappers and travis is more of a musician so until he switches up and tries new s***, it's going to come across as generic to a lot of people. That joint album with quavo is a prime example. Astroworld was boring as s*** because it didnt seem like travis learned anything new.
