Agreed
No boomer s*** but that era of underground East Coast rap was special (Retch, Dash, Bronson, FBZ, Joey etc at their peaks)
i had actually been thinking about that era & the psg tape specifically earlier in the day yesterday, i love how they would blend boom bap with some modern elements & still had bars without being superfluous
sidenote, retch wrote what may be the rudest bar i've ever heard on since my dog died
"i keep it dapper, up in maine eating snapper,
at the table its loud with chatter without manner,
place the drink next to the coaster"
ive heard dozens if not hundreds of songs w things like f***ing someones b**** or threats of violence but something about the simple act of seeing the coaster & deliberately placing the drink next to it struck me so much harder lmfao. part is as 1:30
"A concept album (or rock opera if you prefer), "California '99" told a story (written by Tom Gamache) that was supposed to begin in 1975 following the fourth wage and price freeze in as many years. After disenfranchising the judicial branch of the government, financial and political woes force the president to abdicate. In 1980 the "United States declares bankruptcy; all laws are voided and the entire U.S. is renamed California with higher hopes. All states become countries and all cities become districts." By 1985, insects become the main food staple of the population and the middle of the country is designated the "Marijuana and Insect Corridor" since all the insects thrive on Cannabis plants for some reason."
!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=692Td6gmYQothats a wild concept im gonna have to check this album out
@op that LUM song is actually autobiographical, although it's vague, it's from his perspective, not a random kid being kidnapped. It's part of why he didn't originally want to release the project and hasn't released a pt 2, he said it was too emotional for him

i never knew that, thats f***ing horrible :(
that explains why the terror & anxiety shine through the track so strongly, i cant imagine the fear he must have felt in the moment or how much that must have f***ed up his head
i wonder if the kendrick leaks from earlier this year will end up being on his album or if he scraps them all

i dont want to derail the thread but honestly it makes the project really disturbing to listen to knowing that, it's unsettling knowing why he's so emotional during the songs he's actually rapping on

that definitely gives me a deeper appreciation for the project, im going to have to relisten now that i know its autobiographical. the bravery it takes to even write about something like that let alone put it on record & release it publicly is truly incredible
eminems fall off is such a shame, he had some really great storytelling on his early stuff which now seems to fall into this weird limbo of often being underappreciated due to his youtube commenter tier fans overrating his entire discography leading to non fans being apprehensive towards giving it a fair shot. being a white rapper certainly had a large part in him becoming as successful as he did, but his pen was sharp & there's a reason so many old heads rank him highly
i havent heard much keem but i like everything i've heard. i like the hey ya interpolation in his flow & the low passed warbly beat makes this song feel like when you're drunk in your feelings at the end of the night
one day people will appreciate lil b beyond his status as a meme, he really has some great deep tracks
this has always been one of my all time favourite songs & now i cant listen to it without tearing up
The concept is kinda overused nowadays but Common was one of the first to really pull it off perfectly
!https://youtu.be/TrUERC2Zk64writing songs about hiphop (usually personifying it) may be a bit of a trope, but theres something so pure about an artist expressing their honest feelings toward their artform within that same medium. here's another great example
POV: They just killed Jesus for helping the people
'why eve made him eat that? thats why i dont eat b**** food now'
'okay i f*** w adam, but i'd beat the s*** outta eve'
and i thought nas saying 'when i was 12 i went to hell for snuffing jesus' was sacrilegious , these bars are f***ing hilarious
edit: every time i think he's said the most absurd bar so far he drops one twice as good
@Rickon (i wish we could still quote multiple posts)
lupe has some of the most interesting concepts ive heard in music & is easily one of the greatest writers. whether its something as deep as the drogas wave album
"it's about a group of slaves on a slave ship on their way from Africa to the West Indies and they are thrown off the boat. But they didn’t die. They stayed alive and they lived under the sea. And they dedicated their lives to sinking slave ships – so they became this super, underwater force against slavery."
or something more 'simple' like on switch & dumb it down
