In lieu of the pending art section that @s is fast at work with ( ) let’s just have a jumbo thread for it here in LA. I made a thread asking about artists in this sxn a while ago and we had some surprisingly real talent here, so let’s keep it going.

Im gonna update this post with some of my work later on, and update it intermittently with work shared itt.

And don't be afraid to ask for help, feedback, or advertise yourselves. Post your Twitters, DA's, Tumblrs, IGs, or whatever other platforms you use if you'd like.

Want to get started drawing? All you need is a pencil, paper, and the will to study.

    Where do I start?
The fundamentals: color, composition, value, form, and perspective. There are hundreds of thousands of free guides out there to get started that are easy to find on Youtube or google, its just a matter of finding which ones suit you most.

    What books should I use?
What do you like drawing? Humans, animals, realism, nature/backgrounds, abstract, anime/cartoons, mechs/machines/cars, clothes, etc... it all depends. Find you niche and search from there.
I have a few suggestions for anatomy however, starting with the one that I use and swear by, Classic Human Anatomy in Motion by Valerie Winslow.

Other great popular courses include Figure Drawing (Vilppu), Drawing Manual (Michael Hampton), Constructive Anatomy (George Bridgman), and FORCE (Michael Mattesi).

I would advise against using "how to draw comic/anime/cartoon/fantasy characters" until you've gotten some knowledge of proper anatomy under your belt. Its fine to use as supplementary material if you've got an interest in those types of styles, but don't use them as your primary guides.

    How do I practice?
Study the type of art you like and want to make and copy it. This forces you to break down, dissect, and reproduce the styles and tricks of the artist by studying their work from ground up, in ways you simply can't by just staring at the final products in awe.

And remember, variety is life. Don't go all in on just one type artist - I'd recommend taking three main artists who you enjoy the most and making a folder of their work that you can use to copy for study, and look at for inspiration. Don't just get all anime artists either, keep at least one artist of realism in that circle.

Also, figure drawing. Use quickposes.com below for more info on that.

And remember to have fun. Learning to draw is a grind that isn’t gonna be a thrill 100% of the time, but nothing beats the reward of looking back at your work with the pride and being excited to share it.

    How long should I study?
Hard one to answer, but I'd recommend an hour of distraction-free focus a day at the bare-minimum and going up from there. Otherwise, study as much as you can, especially in the beginning. Consistency is key.

Over time, you will find a study schedule that works for you. Remember to take your breaks.

    Useful sites
quickposes.com/en - My favorite, website with a figure drawing gallery and timer. You set the timer to ~30-60 seconds, it shows a model in a pose for that long, and you draw it as quickly as you can before it changes to the next pic. I'd recommend doing this for your daily warmup before you start drawing.
sketchfab.com/feed - Model viewing website. Great for finding still objects that you can zoom in/out and rotate 360 degrees and get a full view of things on, like weapons, cars, or buildings for example.
posemaniacs.com - Website that hosts hundreds of poses of male and female anatomy.
pointerpointer.com - Website that generates an image of people pointing at where ever your mouse is on the screen. Good for finding references for hands, faces, and speed drawing in general.

    An extra word of advice
Drawing is scary. I know how intimidating it is to make that first stroke on that blank white page, or learning new things you aren't familiar with like color theory, or just drawing something you aren't familiar with like trees and animals, but you have to do it. If you keep doing the same old same old, you're going to keep getting the same old same old. Comfort is the opponent of progress, so you should always be looking for the next lesson and challenge.

Look at it this way: You only have to learn something once, and once you know it, you know it.

If you're steady with learning new ideas then I promise you will be way better than me in my two years of study by the same time.

Wish I had all my old human anatomy drawings from freshman year.

It's wild how comfortable I was with sketching pieces of skeletal and vascular systems but absolutely garbage at getting proportionate hands and fingers.

    Props to those mfs.

Hands are a b**** for almost any artist to draw or model some professional even just trace hands instead of of it doing freely and yet you got it down pact 🙌

It would feel a bit awkward to put my own art in the OP so I'll just post it separately lol. And I have a lot of work to share, but I'll just post three for now.

    twitter.com/GatlaShine

This is the cover of a comic I'm working on. I did the base colors, and a friend added the special effects. Now it just needs a title logo which I'm probably going to need to hire someone for...

    Page 1 of the comic

And this is the cover of the first issue of a comic that the same friend from above and I are working on. Proud to say I did this all on my own, didn't even know I had it in me lol.

Thank you dude that means a lot.
I have no hard date of the release of the whole issue, but my creative process focuses on two pages at a time.
Like most people I drew a lot as a kid and dropped it until adulthood. I've been drawing for 3 or 4 years now but only started taking it seriously 2 years ago, I think. Most people who approach it with a more focused and steady curriculum than me will likely yield much better progress.

I plan my page layouts, borders, and panels by hand in a rough draft, then finalize everything with Procreate on iPad.

is procreate fine to use if you're learning how to draw? been thinking about picking up a iPad and Apple Pencil for drawing and watching stuff

Thank you dude. I'll keep this thread updated with my WIPs and final drafts of pages.

I wouldn't recommend digital tools when learning to draw for the first time. Modern technology can imitate the traditional drawing feel pretty well, but will never be the exact same. Plus you'll be burdened with learning the program and all its tools, shortcuts and tricks to get xyz effect, and so on, before learning how to do things the straight and narrow way first. Before dropping that type of money, prove to yourself that you're serious about it by getting your fundamentals straight with pencil and paper for the first 6-12 months, and then revisit the idea.

Maybe you'll decide you prefer working with traditional media. I've always admired the ability and skillset of artists to make work of this caliber on with just pens and paper, but alas, I drifted to digital myself. (artist - omardogan1976)
