majority of opinion i’ve seen online and in person says it’s a great album and his best solo in a while. personally think it’s good not my favourite

The thing is that he objectively ISN’T a legacy artist

He lives in a similar space as The Weeknd… they’re both at the phase in their careers where they should be considered legacy artists

But they’re also pretty much from the final class of megastars pre-streaming / shattering of the monoculture

So they’ve become multi-generational to the point where you’ll have Gen Z kids who say FATD & CLB are Drake’s best albums, since they were released during their formative years

It’s a precarious position to be an artist who is both past their creative peak & more popular than ever before

He’s a legacy artist by trade imo. His sound fits way more in the 2010s than it does in the current landscape. Way I look at it is for both honestly if they debuted as their current iterations it would be nowhere near as successful as they are coasting off their name/brand

It’s funny you say that and you can hit me with the old man yells at cloud but his “newer” fans of Gen Z are awful and have way too much influence in his decision making. It just seems like he’s in his Magna Carta Jay Z phase except for it’s not a single album it’s an entire era

I used to think that Drake had lost the youth but I was sorely mistaken

Even tho on TikTok it seems like a lot of his old records connect more than some of the new (which lends credence to your legacy artist claim)

Im not on tik tok so idk I’m obviously not the target music consumer for the general landscape today but again Drake debuted in the mainstream almost 20 years ago he will still do “numbers” off his namesake I don’t think squeezing the teet of the algorithm is worth the trade off for making something more quality based but that’s just me

Meh. I don’t view legacy artist with a negative connotation so maybe that’s why people don’t want to call him that but he’s definitely a legacy artist to me personally

If The Weeknd is a legacy artist at this point, then so is Drake

I feel you. It’s all very subjective, but again I feel like most of his relevance is accredited to his likeness that he’s (to his 100% credit) built up over time. I’d be interested to see his music consumption by an age demographic and what they’re listening to by him
