I think for the last decade, people just wanted him to rap instead of cutting corners with pop. People respected the pop because it afforded dominance and market access, but this is a skills era. We all made excuses for it and said it was “range” or a host of other terms to detract from a willingness to do the most foundational thing that made him who he is.

If anything, if he stopped chasing the charts, his music would recover. He’s addicted to industry performance not…just dope s***.
Thats the benefit of being a Wale, Big Sean, BIG KRIT, Wiz or even Kendrick. They knew they couldn’t get #1 so they just have thriving careers in the later years of unimpeachable reputation instead of constant gossip and drama.
