WayUpWojSo I actually ran the numbers because every outlet saying “Wednesday or Thursday reveal” clearly hasn’t thought about the physics.
The structure is roughly 5.4m x 13m footprint, about 3m tall on average. That’s somewhere around 200 tonnes of ice. A commercial ice truck hauls 20 tonnes. This is 10 of those stacked in a Toronto parking lot.
Current Toronto weather: 2°C, NW wind gusting to 41 km/h, mostly cloudy. Today is one of the slower melt days … barely above freezing.
Using convective heat transfer (the actual formula for how air temperature and wind pull heat out of a surface), here’s the rough daily melt by the forecast:
Today at ~5°C above freezing: ~13 tonnes gone
Wed-Fri at 12-16°C: ~28-34 tonnes/day
Weekend: another ~55 tonnes
The release date paper is assumed to be at the bottom. That’s the last ~13% of volume vertically, but it also gets ground heat rising from the dark asphalt below. My window for the actual reveal is April 27-29 … not Wednesday.
On touching/chipping it: security is on site and fans have already been told to back off. But honestly even if you got to it, you’d be dealing with the outermost edge blocks – the paper is buried in the center at the base. You’d need to remove probably 15+ rows of ice blocks to even get close. Not happening.
My bet is that Drake engineered this to land at a specific moment. The ice isn’t random – 200 tonnes at current Toronto temps is roughly a 7-10 day clock. That’s intentional. April 27-29.
Not reading all that. Regardless of if the ice melts or not they have a date in mind and they’ll just bust that b**** down.
Given that they’re letting people on it to f*** with it I’m assuming it’s this Friday.
