I think Drake is as savvy as music business operator as he is talented an artist, and realized the album format was outdated with the rise of streaming. People don’t really buy albums anymore… they like specific songs and add them to playlists.

Drake has also from the get-go appealed to women in a way no other rapper is capable of, and that’s his true strength. So making a full rap project was always going against his artistic temperament in some ways, because he likes to make music that appeals to women. I also think Drake genuinely enjoys making R&B music, and he’s pretty damn good at it.

And then at some point Drake realized he makes more money off Passionfruit than Can’t Have Everything lol. If you listen to his Rap Radar 2019 interview he kinda hints at the idea that non-melodic rap is commercially non-viable, and I think he internalized that. But I do think Drake’s “flagship” drops since Views have been too meandering. There’s too many different types of songs on More Life, Scorpion, CLB and FATD and it makes it hard to appreciate the album as a whole when it drops.

Obviously, over time people come around and “say it’s a sleeper”. But as a Drake fan, a cohesive rap project was missing from his discography. Not since IYRT did he stay focused on rap, and even that project has songs like Jungle and Now & Forever.

That’s why I love HNVM actually. Besides the Jimmy Cooks bonus, sonically it’s a very focused project.

After all these projects, and basically starving the streets of rap verses for over two years I think we all were just waiting for The Boy to go in. And he really didn’t phone it in. Just making 17 music videos is enough for me to see he actually took this s*** seriously.

ICEMAN was definitely needed and dropping two other albums essentially as bonus albums to appease his non-rap fans was genius.
