For all the faults of Yanukovych, he oriented ukraine firmly between both the EU and Russia

He couldn't hold that orientation for long, and his alignment with russia alienated the west kf the country, but it must be noted that this alienation likely wouldn't have occurred to the same extent if he wasn't elected via rigging

Perhaps this is a feasible nlueprint for the future if it can be done in a way that gains the confidence of the west

Worth noting that Macron allegedly gave Putin an assurance that Ukraine would never be admitted to NATO, which was apparently not enough
