Mr DiabloGoing that far back to the no mercy gameplay loop wasn't gonna cut it in today's society.
They really could've gone with either the HCTP gameplay if they still wanted to keep it old school or at least 2K14 gameplay.

I’d say WKII. By the time they got to Wrestle Kingdom 2, it was a good blend of DOR & SVR.
The softer graphics of WKII>>>>>Shiny ass s*** in Fight Forever.
Should’ve been their point of reference.

That would've been a better point of reference, but WKII was a Japanese only game, so the majority of wrestling fans in the west never played it.
Hell, even going with Def Jam Vendetta/Fight for New York gameplay would've worked.
