Just looked into the Warner Discovery business call.

The new head honcho Zaslov was talking about how HBO Max is almost 100 million in the hole and how streaming services have made a mistake in eliminating ad revenue (coincidently AEW is usually top 3 if not #1 each week on cable in terms of key demo that advertisers cater most to) and will need to be rehauled.

He also dispelled rumours of him cutting everything out of the business and that he would be spending more money on series they already have and will obtain and said that the immediate future of their business will be mainly in “linear programming” (television channels like TNT & TBS).

And in the Q2 Highlights paperwork being distributed to shareholders and media, AEW’s ratings success and their corporate synergy with things like their Shark Week crossover are being prominently shown.

Also AEW isn’t being listed on their sports portfolio which is good because that means it’s likely considered “reality” which Zaslov and Discovery are all about.

So if you’re a DC fan, there’s probably some really good reasons to be all doom and gloom about this new shift but it looks like AEW’s in a really good position for next year’s renegotiation. Zaslov’s the one who would have gotten them that SDCC panel last week alongside DC movies and House of the Dragon and Tony said that the meeting he had with Zaslov and his people after the LA Forum show was one of the best business meetings he ever had. It looks like there’s gonna be a lot of money freed up by them taking a razor blade to DC projects and HBO Max Originals that can be given to AEW to upgrade themselves and be front and centre at the bidding wars for talent when it comes to WWE.

The only thing that I think they will really need to focus on is their female demo numbers. A big part of that meeting was talking about the differences in HBO Max’s audience skewing more male which Discovery’s audience skewing more female.

Their female demos have been getting better the last couple months which is good but since the Discovery people are now in charge, it will be a priority. I think this new show AEW are making called “All Elite Girls” is a big push towards that.
