a lot of extreme metal albums are like this for me tbh, especially when the lyrics are totally intelligible and theres a lot of songs with similar style titles. and theyre also very conducive to listening to whole way through instead of just picking a few songs

this thread actually got me going and im now thinking out loud abt how one possible appeal of hip hop (among many) is that its classic albums are REALLY good and instantly enjoyable by anyone

with extreme metal you gotta listen to how they're playing it and a LOT of meat is in its technicalities. you really gotta dig through to find actual songs that you enjoy and remember rather than riffs/instruments/performances, plus the vibes can only get you so far because the music is fundamentally abrasive. with hip hop once you heard Beef Rap its over and you know you're in for something amazing

like even going back to Death I for the life of me cant tell why Human is the one I go back to the most. sure you can look at it in the context of their discography or just how that iteration of the band played together or how Schuldiner's songwriting and vocals had been progressing up until this point. I feel all that but im not over the moon about those 'facts'. the only song that I absolutely enjoy for how good of a song it is is Secret Face but thats about it

My hot take is that if you can’t remember at least a few of the song names, and ESPECIALLY if you’re mixing up songs from other albums while trying to think of the song names, you dont love the project.
