Doja listed first, it just means more.
Is Doja Cat the best mainstream artist to blow up in the last five calendar years?

What’s a non calendar year if you don’t mind me asking

Yeah
Interesting that the first two he listed, Doja and Nas X, are artists who a lot of people would consider Pop artists
tbh the death of this three is the reason why this era of hip hop (after the Kendrick, Cole and Drake era) feels like it lacks superstars.
They were about to get really big
it’s really nuts how these were undoubtedly going to be top 3
Pop smoke was for sure going to drop off the scene
Lil Baby
Only current rapper with a verse on Cole, Drake and Nicki’s most recent albums
the only superstar I see here is doja and maybe megan and lil nas (if he counts) but the rest of these have big star potential
Juice and pop would’ve been superstars too
Roddy and dababy could’ve been superstars but they fell off too quickly
I think just like with NBA franchises, the idea of a superstar/big market is dead
Everything is so accessible, a centralized lightning Rod for stans just don’t come the same way
The best from the late 00s-early 10s still dramatically dominate the album charts don’t they? They certainly seem to do that with the social media conversation
Nas X, DaBaby, Jack Harlow are doing a good job tho
Most recent superstar is lil baby right before that was Trav
I feel like playboi carti has star power and star potential but he wouldn’t do anything to get past that peak (brand deals etc, the Travis way)
I have a working theory that rap is so large now with so many sub genres, that we won’t see a clear cut number one ever again like Drake.
As far as superstars go, the talent is there. It’s just a matter of who can put everything together.

Hip hop is pop
