The ability of humans to survive relies on their ability to exploit their environment. Hunter gatherers, pastoralists, farmers, etc all had to in some ways "destroy the earth". Just look at the ecological catastrophes that Romans brought on to themselves.

I think there is a spectrum of extraction from the environment though. for example, a modern human society might destroy the structure of an ecosystem or degrade top soil to the point where new plants cant grow

now technically, hunting and harvesting are also taking from nature, but those things can be done in a way that allows it to regenerate and maintain a certain balance

with modern technology there are ways to extract from nature in as efficient and "balanced" of a way as possible, but these methods are usually misused or (more commonly) overused because ppl want to make more money
