  • Is Olivia Rodrigo the Kendrick Lamar of pop? Ok this might be a bit of a stretch, but I’ve been thinking about it.

When Olivia Rodrigo and Kendrick Lamar were at similar stages in their careers (early 20s. A couple major projects in), they both kind of ended up in this weird space where they’re huge commercially, but also way more intentional than most mainstream artists around them.

Like with Kendrick around good kid, m.A.A.d city, it wasn’t just “he makes good songs.” It felt like he was building something cohesive. He was telling a story, dealing with identity, environment, all that, but in a way that still broke through to a massive audience.

Olivia feels similar in a pop way with SOUR and GUTS. Obviously it’s a different genre and subject matter, but there’s a similar sense that she’s not just throwing together pop hits. The songs feel really specific and emotional, and the albums actually feel like they’re designed to be taken as a whole and not designed to just be a playlists of singles.

At that stage, it seems like both of them kind of had some similarities.

    Huge mainstream success right away
A pretty strong “this is my thing” artistic identity early on
Music that felt personal but still culturally resonant
Albums that felt more intentional than most of their peers

Obviously Kendrick is dealing with much bigger systemic and social themes, and Olivia is more focused on relationships, growing up, emotional stuff, etc. So I’m not saying they’re equivalent in content or impact. More like they both feel like artists who are pushing what “mainstream” music is allowed to look like in their lane. Maybe I’m reaching, but is Olivia kind of playing a Kendrick like role in pop right now?

Curious if anyone else sees the same thing or if I’m just connecting dots that aren’t really there.

Who says I don't like him? Not a huge fan but I don't mind him, he got a few songs that I like

And that's also a false statement, I post like 10-20 times in a months so I am not on here that often. So if that's the case then it's most likely due to the thread being dead

I've always liked it more than most on KTT, but also less than the general public. However, when I saw him do it live for the Mr. Morale tour it finally clicked for me that this is a generational song
