just got a new isp that uses google wifi. they have it set up in my laundry room so I was thinking of setting up a port upstairs closer to my room. If I get one do you have to plug it into the original and have wires running up to it or just plug into an outlet?

it would be faster if you had a cable instead of using the wireless backhaul but it would work and be better then how it is rn

Yup, unless you got a wireless repeater which essentially gives your ethernet enabled device wifi capabilities.

If you're super a*** about internet latency (like you play multiplayer games and take it seriously, even then the latency might be negligible ), you might not want that. You'll want to instead move that router closer to you, or use a long cord.

If you're just streaming and surfing the web something like a Apple Airport base would be what you're looking for. It basically captures the wifi signal from your router and turns into a router itself and you're able to connect it to your s*** via ethernet.

Think of it as an external wifi card.

Why wouldn’t you just use the WiFi?

Don't use the outlet, figure out where ur google wifi is on the floor above it and dig a tiny hole in the wall, send down an ethernet cable. Nerds in highschool will do it for you for like $25 + materials, find a dude on craigslist or some s***. You'll need a second wifi access point to plug into it but its the best way to go, and the hole is small enough that you can do it in places you rent, it's a super easy drywall patch no one will ever know when u move out.
