People who are belligerently ignorant of music before the 1980s have some impoverished takes ITT
Not a fan of R Kelly as a person at all.
But his catalog is more consistent than a lot of R&B acts. His hits have a lot of replay value that can appeal to wide crowds of appeal and he's super versatile in terms of subgenres and production.
I do think Kellz was an off brand Aaron Hall vocally but his music overally was definitely great except for his late career.
Jay-Z did a collab album/tour with him
the only other artists he’d done that with are Beyoncé and Kanye West
that should tell you enough

The collab album Jay did with Kanye is the only good collab album he's ever made and Beyonce is immensely better than R. Kelly lol

completely different era
we talking about contemporary r&b here
that’s like bringing up Bill Russell when we talking about Lebron

whatever you have to tell yourself bro

Okay but you could make the same arguments for Aaliyah, Usher, Chris Brown, etc. None of them were as vocally powerful as the Motown era.
For an artist who debuted in the 90's, R Kelly's catalog is legendary and has proven to have stood the test of time. Saying otherwise is rewriting history, especially when there were Black folks all over social media when Surviving came out saying that they need to stop playing his music at functions.
R Kelly's music career was/is legit. He's a good artist and a terrible person.

Aaliyah? Usher? Aaliyah and Usher are unreal lol. Aaliyah has a flawless discography with 2 classics lol. Usher got a real solid discography too
Chris Brown is trash idgaf
"One in a Million" is better than any R. Kelly song ever made
Bro had a few hit songs that were good, that's it. Not a classic album to his name (a few good ones though), and he is frankly a mediocre vocalist. As far as 90s R&B is concerned Ginuwine mops the goddamn floor with R. Kelly as a vocalist, as do Jodeci, Boyz II Men, D'Angelo of course, Maxwell, Usher, Joe, s*** even 90s MJ was running laps around R. Kelly, as was Prince.
Dude's name other than the "Ignition Remix", literally one f***in song, barely came up since the late 2000s. He gets caught up being a serial pedophile, and now people are worried about cancel culture and artistic legacy. Where was this energy in like 2017? Who the f*** was checking for R. Kelly after like 2008? What's the game gonna miss, his Jay Z collab albums? His mid Stevie Wonder impressions?
R. Kelly always been a half assed artist and the reason his music is going to be forgotten is because it's forgettable music.
R Kelly is one of the R&B goats
