In the late 80s they were mostly 18-20 year olds. They were kids
LL didnt turn 21 until 89
Same for Kool G Rap and Kane
De La Soul dropped their first album fresh out of high school
Queen Latifah was 19 when she dropped her first album in 89
Eric B and Rakim were 20 by the time their 2nd album dropped
Ice Cube was 19 when Straight Outta Compton dropped
KRS One was 22 when Criminal Minded dropped
age is not really a good way to measure this. there are still kids that are dropping music. like Luh Tyler is 17 now but i'm pretty sure he started at 16 or younger. just that the market is saturated now, probably hundreds if not thousands of kids doing it right now.
rap is just saturated and i guess that's the sign of it being old.
someone needs to research rap's blow up because I swear the amount of Rappers selling 100k+ units of a SONG must have literally 10x'd in a single year around 2015/2016
Rap following rock's path. We're at about the 90s rn
damn we really all collectively lived through our own version of the 80s in 2010s, crazy it never occurred to me

which is why this thread is a non issue
somebody said that because ktt is a forum which is somewhat a thing of the past it naturally attracts people who spent a lot of time on the Internet and actually know what forum is. as a result everybody is slightly older here bc the real zoomers and alphas are on TikTok and twitter and whatnot
so I dont wanna hear anything from yall about age, start taking care of ur knees bredda
Maybe it’s getting old if you never stay up to date and let the game pass you by

MattyB is in his 20s now…
Some of these aren’t as much of a surprise (IE: big Sean, Drake & meek who are all past their prime and have been around)
but to think guys like 21, Durk, Baby, Gunna, Babyface Ray who are still talked about as what’s NOW and generally have very immature subject matters are all pushing 30s is crazy
Future the active misogynistic king turns 40 years old…..
Is rap just going to die soon? We haven’t seen a renaissance like 2016 since. “Underground” names pop up but haven’t made any real mainstream noise or shown staying power
Is all we have to look forward to Ice Spice and Yeat for the next decade?
Lil Baby has immature subject matter?
ye, pusha t, jay, pharrell, lil wayne, others have been making music while still gaining a lot of attention forever atp.
when i hear someone like jay z or future flexing on a song it makes it 10x better than when i hear someone like summrs talk about their leased sports car
theres always been a spot for older rappers i dont understand whats the problem
Yeah s*** ages tf you expect. Rap has always been weird bout age. Wonder why other genres aren’t
No. Being 30+ in the club with the priorities I listed is still as sad as it’s always been.
Go settle down with a woman you love, be an active father, be a positive example for your community, find god.
Leave the other s*** for the young men whose brains aren’t fully developed yet
again proving my point that you are trying to impose your own will and social standards onto others. who are you to tell somebody when they should settle down lol. And why does being single automatically mean that they aren't an active father... like who told you that? Are you really that self righteous? What if someone doesnt want to be a married in their 30's, or at all? It's equivalent to telling a woman who prioritizes career to go make babies and be a mom. It's so insulting and arrogant.
It's ironic that you are trying to lecture people on what they should make music about subject matter wise yet you talk like you have never traveled or experienced anything outside of your own bubble. Your arrogance is very american. get over yourself. and I'm willing to bet that these "club" rappers whom you look down on have done more for their communities than you probably ever will.
