When I think of J cole I think of the word "mediocre". Now we all have our definiton of what mediocre means but when you look it up in the dictionary you get this definition
Of only moderate quality; not very good: "a mediocre actor".
And that is how I describe Cole's entire career from the Come Up to his new single. Of moderate, lukewarm content. Nothing ground breaking but nothing of horrible quality. Just pure unadulterated mediocrity. Nothing stands out about him. Not his weak personality, he doesn't have a strong mic presence, nor does he have the charisma to wow anyone. His lyrical ability is above-average at best and his flow is never changing. Just look at this thread if you wanna see why J cole has some wack ass punch lines slumz.boxden.com/f87/top-70-worst-lines-j-cole-cole-world-sideline-story-1626763
Another word I relate to Cole is safe. From a production stand point, to a subject matter stand point, and the overal direction of his sound. There is little progression from tape to tape in terms of both sonically and subject matter.
His low-fi ass depressing music never really changes and his continuous gripes about making it never seem to as well.
Also I hear so much that his music is deep or that has real meaning but is it really? It seems to me his "conscious" songs don't really say much and don't really connect the listener to any deep understanding he is just trying to prove. It is all shallow, base emotions that he is pushing and this plus the fact that much of his production sound the same means he is really boring to listen to.
I'm guessing by now everyone has heard the new Cole Single From the amount of threads about Cole (this being just another one of them) I can see that at least he was gotten a lot of buzz on here. One thing that I notice from his legion of fans is that he is back or something like that.
But the one dirty secret from His last album was that it wasn't some Nastradamus bomb of an album, it was the same s*** Cole has been releasing since 07 and people are just getting tired of it. Other than the fact that many songs from this album appear on his mixtapes is the fact that sonically and in terms of subject matter it is no different than his mixtapes. His work after CW:SS showed that he hasn't switched up his style in the least and that he is even regressing trying to regain the acclaim he had off of FNL and the Warm Up.
Also another trend I am seeing is that Cole being compared to Drake. It would make sense if you look at it in shallow terms both are half-black, came up around the same time, and are considered leaders of the new generation of rappers.
The biggest difference between the two is that sonically Drake has considerably progressed (its all subjective his music is actually good or bad). You can just can look at his three lead singles he has released over the years Those songs are completely different from each other sonically and show progression in how he Drakes makes his music. Drake has proven countless of times that he can evolve and step outside his comfort zone (stepping away from the sound of So Far Gone to make TML). He has looked for different producers and artists to help supplement his new sound (from boi-1da to t-minus to mike zombie).
The open secret in music is that the legends and hit-makes have shown an acute sense of balancing progression, staying true to their original sound, and understanding how the sound of the era is. Greats like Jay-Z and Kanye are the best examples. And at this point I would put Drake with those guys and not J cole.
TL;DR
How the f*** can you stan a nigga who looks like this smh
Baby, when I smash you, put your back in it

Don't take a whole Perc', she want half of it

She be touchin' on her own body
Verse 1: Lil Durk

First time me f***in', I told nobody
Thought she was a Pretty Ricky b**** but she like Yo Gotti
Thinkin' she a pretty decent b**** but she a ho probably

In an age full of mediocrity, Cole stands out.
We're living in a s***ty era for rap.
I think he's dope from time to time, but isn't extraordinary.
He'd get chewed up & spit out in the golden era.
But for the times we live in now? He's the cream of the crop.
Oh god. No he wouldn't lol
Op says he doesn't know who you are and he doesn't care.
Also called you Kidrock.
glad we on the same page then

I went to a J. Cole concert once. I was happy and talking to my friends but when we got up to hand in our tickets, the attendant called me back as I walked away. "You'll need these" she said as she handed me a pillow and sleeping bag.
I questioned her and she laughed and said "You'll get it soon enough."
We walked through the hallways and got to the concert hall. The place was already filling up so we got our spots. There wasn't too much energy in the crowd but it was to be expected since there were no openers. Finally Cole came on and to my utter shock, no one jumped or cheered or made any sort of acknowledgement of the man they paid to see. Inexplicably, everyone started to sit on the floor. I followed because I didn't want to look stupid.
All around me people were laying out their sleeping bags. Some came prepared with blinders. I even saw one girl with a teddy bear. Cole shouted "What's up New York?!" and the crowd gave a listless "uhhh" in response. The opening bars of Foldin Clothes started and to my surprise everyone was still on the floor! There were already people in their sleeping bags! And then I understood - this wasn't a concert! It was a group sleep session!
I tried to stay awake as long as I could. He went through Foldin Clothes, Neighbors and Work Out. All around me people were falling asleep. I was beginning to feel tired myself. Then his Last Call ripoff began and I couldn't fight the waves of tiredness anymore. I fell asleep. I understood what J. Cole shows were then.
Best sleep of my life.

This site's disconnect with the real world is so cringe sometimes man.
the worlds disconnect with ktt is what's realy embarrassing!
all this J Cole hate made me run through 4YEO again and the intro track is so incredible.
Okay I'm gonna explain Cole's appeal to me even though nobody asked. In hip hop we've always had music about the extremes of black culture with the era's of gangsta rap, bling era, crunk, trap, etc, but with Cole he represents the same black struggles as those other genres while working hard to think through it without being reactionary and choosing a path that isn't as glamorized. We've heard of the killers, the d*** dealers, the jackboys, all that s***. Cole grew up with and understood the plights of each one of those people. I was born in a similar part of North Carolina as Cole. Its not Chicago, Atlanta, Brooklyn, Compton or any of the extremely dangerous cities that make the news but those issues we hear about are present in every black community I've ever lived in. The only difference is the scale of the problems. In Chicago, someone may die every week. Where I'm from someone was killed like everyone 3 months.
Its not as newsworthy as other places but the idea is that these struggles (not just murders...but addictions, mental health issues, d*** dealing, incarceration as well) are just as prominent and impactful in every community you find them in. Cole chose the path to play ball, go to college and then rap. A lot of people listen to music as some sort of entertainment or escapism, but Cole's music is much more relatable than all of that other s***. He tells his stories in interesting ways that are able to be felt by most black Americans like me; born in the hood but was able to navigate through the streets without being consumed by them and becoming a part of them. The average black dude born in any hood in America is more akin Cole than they are Gucci and that's refreshing. Not many rappers have spread this message as well as Cole has but of course there are a few others such as Kendrick and Lupe (from what I understand De La Soul did it in the 90s but I was never a fan). The argument of how lyrical he is can be a pro or con depending on how you receive his music tbh. I've never sat down and listened to Cole verses and thought to myself “Wow he just wasted 16 bars not talkin about s***”. His music is like Cudi's in the sense that its meant to reach people so that they can feel more comfortable with who they are and why.
In so many social circles I've been in I always hear people talkin s*** about not being black enough, talking white, not being street enough, etc. and Cole combats that stereotype while also making hit songs. That's why I f*** with Cole. And the people who portray Cole's music as being shallow or vapid really don't seem to understand that many people hear his message loud and clear.
F*** KOD tho tbh.
OP is dead right
Would visit music sxn a lot more if there were more accurate insightful threads like this

The Warm Up is good. and Cole has some high highs on certain projects, but his entire catalog def has a lot of mediocrity. but he has found a lane. there are a ton of street rappers (Dugg, Durk, Sosa, Gucci, etc.) and a ton of bragodocio rappers (Drake, etc.) who rap about how much money and how many hoes they have. there aren't a ton of rappers who rap about what Cole raps about as well as Cole does ("conscious" s*** and basic relatable s***)

they are definitely at the top in rap but they are under Kendrick and Ye
