When I think of J cole I think of the word "mediocre". Now we all have our definiton of what mediocre means but when you look it up in the dictionary you get this definition

Of only moderate quality; not very good: "a mediocre actor".

And that is how I describe Cole's entire career from the Come Up to his new single. Of moderate, lukewarm content. Nothing ground breaking but nothing of horrible quality. Just pure unadulterated mediocrity. Nothing stands out about him. Not his weak personality, he doesn't have a strong mic presence, nor does he have the charisma to wow anyone. His lyrical ability is above-average at best and his flow is never changing. Another word I relate to Cole is safe. From a production stand point, to a subject matter stand point, and the overal direction of his sound. There is little progression from tape to tape in terms of both sonically and subject matter.

His low-fi ass depressing music never really changes and his continuous gripes about making it never seem to as well.

Also I hear so much that his music is deep or that has real meaning but is it really? It seems to me his "conscious" songs don't really say much and don't really connect the listener to any deep understanding he is just trying to prove. It is all shallow, base emotions that he is pushing and this plus the fact that much of his production sound the same means he is really boring to listen to.

I'm guessing by now everyone has heard the new Cole Single From the amount of threads about Cole (this being just another one of them) I can see that at least he was gotten a lot of buzz on here. One thing that I notice from his legion of fans is that he is back or something like that.

But the one dirty secret from His last album was that it wasn't some Nastradamus bomb of an album, it was the same s*** Cole has been releasing since 07 and people are just getting tired of it. Other than the fact that many songs from this album appear on his mixtapes is the fact that sonically and in terms of subject matter it is no different than his mixtapes. His work after CW:SS showed that he hasn't switched up his style in the least and that he is even regressing trying to regain the acclaim he had off of FNL and the Warm Up.

Also another trend I am seeing is that Cole being compared to Drake. It would make sense if you look at it in shallow terms both are half-black, came up around the same time, and are considered leaders of the new generation of rappers.

The biggest difference between the two is that sonically Drake has considerably progressed (its all subjective his music is actually good or bad). You can just can look at his three lead singles he has released over the years Those songs are completely different from each other sonically and show progression in how he Drakes makes his music. Drake has proven countless of times that he can evolve and step outside his comfort zone (stepping away from the sound of So Far Gone to make TML). He has looked for different producers and artists to help supplement his new sound (from boi-1da to t-minus to mike zombie).

The open secret in music is that the legends and hit-makes have shown an acute sense of balancing progression, staying true to their original sound, and understanding how the sound of the era is. Greats like Jay-Z and Kanye are the best examples. And at this point I would put Drake with those guys and not J cole.
