i got people telling me got into rap in like 2018 or 2021 or 2023 im like HOW
its a bunch of users on this website who will argue you up and down that have openly admitted they didn’t hear Future until 2016 and probably only started listening to trap music because of Travi$ Scott
why you think they talk down trap music every chance they get, they think Travis Scott beats is what trap should be evolving from lmfao
I feel this is too subjective to say definitively, maybe for the youngins, but I can think of plenty of rappers that have said they listen to other genres.
There’s more music programs now than ever and they are more accessible than ever too
until you look at the demographic of WHO has said access to those programs.

Looking at the music education funding landscape twenty-five years later, we can see that music education budget cuts disproportionately impact school districts that serve students of color, immigrant students and low-income communities. According to the most recent federal data, a majority of students in the U.S. have access to music education as part of their school day. The approximately 7,000 schools without music programs are predominantly in school districts that serve black, immigrant and low-income student populations.
we talking bout hip hop. That's a black genre.
And sidebar: We was talking about this type of s*** back in 2010 lol, my high school football team was straight trash but was getting more funding and attention than the band/chorus classes. And we was making All-State ("r u in good hands")

that's literally why op put method man in the op lol.

Idk a single person that didn’t have a band/music period in high school/middle school. And even outside of the schools they have community centers and things of that nature where a kid can learn an instrument and play in a youth orchestra.
Even your local library probably has s*** like a music production course during the school breaks.
This stuff is more accessible than ever before. We just gotta be real we have a lower quality of parent. They’re fine with letting the kids rot in front of the game or the tablet
I’ve been saying this. Growing up around only rap then making it yourself is like incest. You gotta mix that s*** with some other s***

2016? Nigga what

I said that in the original post they working 2-3 jobs and leaving they kids to be parented by the internet.
But I do agree. As generation of said parents, millennials gotta hold ourselves accountable. Telling yall ima write a thesis on how NCLB ruined the world lol.

Bit different today than then though, people might be aware or heard things through family of older acts and other s***. I think people get older and diversify their interests, so I wouldn't knock younger people on that.
It's more accessible, but it doesn't feel like a lot of people in general leave their select pockets of familiarity.
There’s a REASON all those “special” new acts we love just have that thing that sets them apart.
You can tell from his ife radio dj sets and even his samples that MIKE listened to so much different types of music.
keiyaA went to school for jazz saxophone lol like, there’s just those idiosyncrasies that ssparate an artist from a “yo i was inspired to rap after listening to da drought 3” type of artist (and no starsx there is nothing inherently WRONG with that artist, but it does put a ceiling on where said artist can take their own craft)
2016? Nigga what
CKL (an entire old mod on this website) said he didn’t hear a future song until 2016. Them European Drake fans just be exposing themselves willingly

Not listening to future until 2016 means you missed so much s*** smh. S*** even if you started in 2015.

Weird post. I hate when yall white people try to make a***ogies for hip hop.
Weird post. I hate when yall white people try to make a***ogies for hip hop.
and that’s my main issue with the thread, it’s going to bring them around like “finally, they’re calling each others lack of culture out so I don’t have to”
like
you do not have to be cultured extensively in arts to partake in art as a talent or one who wants to make it
you can deadass just like what you like, listen to that, and make that, f*** people tryna tell you that you must get cultured or else. elitist as f*** and what keeps the doors of expression boxed into some bullshit ass criteria for creativity
Rappers only listening to their own music is what will help kill the genre
It’s fine to stick to a genre but your own bubble? Nahhhh
what’s wrong with listening to your own music?
wtf are ya’lls criteria for creatives man, such limiting views. rappers been listening to their music since inception lmaoo
the problem these lil niggas don’t respect hiphop ,or the niggas that came before them. niggas don’t know how to make classics because they didn’t grow up on hiphop classics.
This new generation don’t respect the craft
When I was 13 I knew classics from the 90s and 80s and respect the s*** out the genre. these niggas not real hiphop fans just looking for a quick buck because they got a little flow
think this is just a commonality across all mediums of entertainment with the new generation
boomers, millennials and older Gen Z can’t seem to accept the fact that these kids quite simply just do not give a f*** about legacy or history due to no monoculture
type s*** that motivates the Yachty’s and Post Malone’s to talk down on rap culture. Do you niggas not hear yourselves?
yeah for example shock g was a hip hop artist but he also played in funk bands and was a dj as well he’s not this all time great rapper but he helped craft some all time sounds. DMX was a beatboxer and breakdancer at one point, producers like RZA, Premo, Kanye, Bink that had these crazy samples had some knowledge of music as a whole to make those beats. Feels like the soundscape in general is really narrow
Yeah, expanding your music experience and going around other music scenes being looked down as lame and corny hurt a lot
Ironically a lot of it comes from the "I'm not a rapper I'm an artist" dumbass crowd of rappers but they still only listen to Rap
Yacthy was like this until this decade, he never even heard of Pink Floyd then once he finally listened to Dark side of the Moon is when he started doing his alt ish (regardless of how well he actually did it)
Lot of Rap fans usually "only" listen to Rap and RnB, but it's (or was) the opposite with most Rappers who listened to so much s***, some of them actually didn't even listen to Rap itself that much outside of their own scene or area
Even a lot of gangster Rappers and "ringtone" era Rappers did and how they got their melodies and production influence
Now there are Rappers and sub genres of course still like this, but it's a major lost aspect specifically for mainstream and mainstream wannabe Rappers since the middlish 2010s to now
Also mainstream and wannabe mainstream Rappers not listening to much if at all other genres also hurts the sample based producers
These Rappers end up not recognizing samples and sounds n harder times finding pockets n ideas and ish thus they pass on them leading to sampling becoming more rare in mainstream outside of sampling radio pop records that are so on the nose and recent
This more a symptom of society than said rappers
Those rappers from the 80s and 90s and 00s had elders and music programs in schools and churches where they were exposed to different forms of music and genres where their styles could then be shaped.
A lot of rappers also played instruments (scarface, pimp c)
Now? The parents of today have to work 2-3 jobs leaving kids to be parented by the internet, music programs get defunded from schools more than ever, and the chickens came back to roost for all the trauma church kids went through so now the youth dont jack that either.
Tl;dr: capitalism sucks. Who knew
Idk if this applies in this case. Growing up in the 70s (like method man) and listening to bootsy collins, beatles, etc wasn't some rare thing
